Put your skill with people to work in our very busy library to help ensure the safety and comfort of our customers and staff. The Security Officer will greet and assist adults, teenagers, and children at the Main Library, and occasionally at the Douglass Branch, monitoring behavior inside the building and on the grounds. This job requires a person with the highest level of patience, diplomacy, and communication skills.

Public library or retail security experience preferred. Experience with teens preferred. Law enforcement or military experience preferred. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful.

Schedule: Sundays 12:45 - 6:15 PM, Mondays and Tuesdays 2:00 - 9:15 PM.

Examples of Duties:

• Greets customers, offering general assistance to patrons in their use of our facilities; maintains a friendly demeanor
• Helps customers with lost personal items, illnesses, or emergency situations
• Acts pro-actively to defuse potentially disruptive situations, recognizing and referring situations best handled by law enforcement
• Escorts disruptive patrons from Library premises; calls police when necessary
• Helps customers comply with Library Rules of Behavior and other policies governing use of Library property and the Internet
• Interacts effectively with all age groups, including teen age library patrons, monitoring behavior and ensuring compliance with library rules and polices
• Patrols the interior of the library and exterior property regularly
• Locks building at closing; ensures safety of staff as they leave the building
• With library staff, stays with unaccompanied children after closing to ensure their safety until picked up
• Manages access to secure areas of the building; unlocks offices as necessary for cleaning crew
• Assists with transporting library materials and equipment around the building and outside
• Assists during weather emergencies, guiding library patrons to shelter areas
• Observes and reports matters pertaining to library building condition and maintenance
• Observes and acts appropriately when faced with fire or other emergency and life-threatening situations
• Completes incident reports as required
• Assists with Library emergency drills

• Physical ability to lift materials weighing up to 40 pounds and to push fully loaded carts of library materials
• Valid driver's license, acceptable driving history, and personal automobile for required job-related transportation
• Satisfactory criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening

Acceptable Experience and Training:

• High school diploma or GED
• Public library or retail security experience preferred
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
