CH2M HILL Industrial & Advanced Technology (I&AT) group is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill a number of positions in the role of Project Design Manager . The focus of the Project Design Manager is on leading a design team in the collaborative planning and coordination of their work, establishing a healthy and productive team environment, while maintaining intense focus on learning, continuous improvement, and elimination of constraints. We are adopting Responsibility-based Project Delivery™ (RbPD) as a key strategy to meet these goals. RbPD is a flexible and adaptable system for planning and coordinating work on design projects. The Project Design Manager leads the team in their practice of RbPD (while the Project Manager/Chief Designer maintains responsibility for delivering the project for the Client). Team members plan their own work collaboratively, iteratively, and through daily commitment-making. Learning and improving are embedded. RbPD creates intense focus on producing just what is valued while eliminating waste. Customer orientation is inherent and reinforced.
Responsibilities of the Project Design Manager include:
Ensures team's highest-priority needs are being served. Watches for stress points within the team or process and helps to alleviate them.
Enforces the values and practices of the process and the team. Leads the process and brings the team to agreement.Has authority over the process but not individuals or project.
Responsible to bring all components of RbPD together to function as a system. Coaches the team in RbPD practices.
Challenge team to resolve and remove constraints which prevent fulfilling commitments.
Guide team to negotiate and renegotiate their commitments and to identify new actions to remove their constraints.
Elevate constraints the team is not able to resolve on their own. Takes action on behalf of the team to remove constraints. Shield team from external interference.
Lead iterative planning conversations with participation by the customer, team, Project Manager and/or Chief Designer and all other appropriate contributors.
Leads the Daily Check-in (commitment-making) sessions.
Ensures that team is functional, productive, and focused on improving reliability.
Monitors the progress of the work. Receives and tracks the team's commitments; records the planned work on the work register.
Lead retrospectives for learning and improving. Keeps the team's attention on improving. Embodies continuous improvement.
Skills of successful Project Design Managers include:
Making and securing reliable promises
Organization and planning
Ability and desire to master new skills
Bachelor degree in engineering or architecture
Minimum 2 years of technical design discipline and project leadership experience
Minimum of 5 years experience with multidiscipline design integration, interdependencies, and system-level relationships
