Purpose

Under minimum supervision, analyze, design, direct and perform the development, enhancement, and maintenance of designated systems, applications, programs in a primarily Unix-based (or Linux) Client/Server environment with a Relational Database Engine running an enterprise application. On a secondary level have some interaction with Linux-based server environment, based on special programming/application requests submitted by University wide departments and end-users. Provide technical assistance and detailed program documentation on the Student Information System to Supervisors and other parties.

Accountabilities

Through readings, meetings, and other training keep current on changes and new developments and techniques that will improve the systems.
With frequency, select the most innovative and efficient methods of developing and implementing new computer programs and systems.
Review existing computer programs and recommend refinements, improvements and enhancements to ensure the most efficient methods are employed.
Work under minimum supervision.
Exhibit self-motivation.
Design and use troubleshooting strategies to resolve software problems.
Seek out and recommend new software applications to improve client efficiency.
Meet with decision makers, systems owners, and end users to define business, financial, and operations requirements and systems goals, and identify and resolve systems issues.
Lead design sessions in prototyping new systems for the purpose of enhancing business processes, operations, and information process flow.
Review and analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems and develop strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
Identify and establish scope and parameters of systems analysis in order to define outcome criteria and measure-taking actions.
Other duties as assigned that support the overall mission of the Department and University

Scope

Assure compliancy of standards on LinuxUNIX platforms.
Assure efficient performance of LinuxUNIX Systems.
Assure efficient performance of relational Database engines.
Create in applicable programming languages efficient applications and programming solutions for different constituents with up to 300 end Users.
Developing solutions to complex applications and program requirements from up to 30 different University departments.
Assure integrity of the System (data, application, programs, and engine).
Develop and make recommendations on applications, processes and programs.
Develop, Install and make system recommendations and/or enhancements requested by constituents.

Position Requirements

College diploma or university degree.
3 - 5 years related work experience
Full knowledge of the UNIX and/or Linux platform environment (Hardware and Software)
Working knowledge of Linux (SUSE preferred) (Hardware and Software)
Full knowledge and understanding of the relational Database engines preferred
Proficiency in JAVA (preferred)
Proficiency and not limited to the following Programming Languages – PHP ,C, PERL preferred
Full proficiency with the different Query Tools, like MYSQL, etc.
Comprehension of a Student Information System or related large information system
Trouble shooting abilities and solution offering to complex applications, programs.
Highly self-motivated and directed.
Keen attention to detail.
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Strong customer service orientation.
Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment

Physical Requirements

Occasional evening and weekend work to meet deadlines.
Sitting for extended periods of time.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard or mouse, and to handle other computer components.
Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals
