Performs general maintenance and limited technical repair on a wide variety of vehicles that compromise the Division's automotive fleet, which may vary in vehicle make, model, and year and which may include light and heavy duty trucks, vans, sports utility vehicles, motor homes, all terrain vehicles, and motorcycles, as well as, non-vehicular equipment, such as generators.
Inspects and locates worn, broken, or damaged parts through visual or physical inspections and utilizes standardized maintenance checklists to ensure completion of all scheduled preventive maintenance work.
Issues and receives loaner vehicles to/from Division staff or other authorized users.
Performs minor accident repairs, and installation and repair of accessories (such as weapons mounts) which do not require the intervention or assistance of higher level workers or mechanics.
Applicants must meet the following qualification requirements:
Must meet the automotive staff certification requirements of the office facility to which assigned (as stated in Section C.1.8.2 of the PWS) and/or for development purposes, the incumbent may be required to obtain and maintain certification in Tech II or M-Tech, WDS or NGS; and/or DRB III diagnostic scan tools and automotive industry certification (such as through ASE) in Electronics, OBD II, Fuel Injection, ABS, and/or HVAC.
Technician must be automotive industry and EPA certified to purchase R-12 and R-134a refrigerant.
Experienced in automotive maintenance procedures.
Experienced using a wide variety of test and measuring instruments to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, replace, or overhaul major automotive systems in a wide variety of vehicles and non-vehicular equipment.
Experienced using computers to enter data; work orders; and run reports.

This position is a term appointment not to exceed (NTE) 2 years.
This position will be filled by detail or through temporary promotion. Incumbent selected for this position will be returned to his/her former position or other comparable grade and location after the assignment is completed. If
this position is filled through temporary promotion, the selection may be made permanent without further competition.
Applicants must possess a valid driver's license for state of residence, as well as obtain a government license for the operation of government vehicles, if selected for this position.
Some travel may be required.
Working Conditions: For the most part, work is performed in an enclosed facility, which is usually drafty, noisy, and exposes workers to toxic fumes, dirt, dust, and grease. Ventilation systems may be present to reduce the level of airborne hazards. The incumbent occasionally performs repairs outside in all weather conditions. Vehicle fluids, such as batter acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin, or be otherwise hazardous to health. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains.
Physical Demands: The incumbent frequently makes repairs and may assist other workers in making repairs while vehicles are overhead, and where parts worked on are often in hard-to-reach places. The incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. The incumbent frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds and occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh 50 pounds or more.
