Access Services Registration Representative - Emergency Department

Part Time - Weekday/Daytime

The Access Services Registration Rep ED in the Emergency Department, under general

supervision, obtains current and accurate demographic and insurance information to register

patients and verifies insurance coverage and eligibility via phone, fax, and/or on-line. The ED

Rep serves as a liaison between management, clinical staff and patients with the ability to

demonstrate critical thinking and effective communication in a high paced, high stress

environment. An Access Services Registration Rep ED is generally responsible for assuring

correct billing information and minimizing the reimbursement risks associated with providing care

to patients, including negotiating patient payments.

Conducts Triage Registration of identified or non-identified patients within five

minutes of patient presenting to the Emergency Department obtaining minimal

demographic information.

Conducts bedside patient interviews using workstations on wheels; obtaining

complete and accurate demographic, insurance and financial data to complete

registration.

Ability to walk, stand, bend or push a workstation on wheels 90% or more of the

assigned shift.

Ability to flex schedule to meet the department needs to include longer

scheduled shifts and may include night, weekend and holiday coverage.

Demonstrates ability to manage an evolving patient volume while performing

additional chart management duties (locating and filing) to ensure patient safety

and flow.

Verifies patient eligibility for insurance coverage, when applicable, and

documents appropriate benefit levels for anticipated services. Determines

patient liability and advises patient of financial responsibility requirements per

policy.

Negotiates payment arrangements per BHCS policy. Collects fees, provides

receipts and maintains financial records per BHCS policy.

Explains and obtains appropriate consents from patient or family member in

addition to any other regulatory, required and/or applicable forms.

Reviews accounts for potential eligibility for government or community

programs and/or discusses the application process with patients and refers to

assigned vendor as necessary.

Effectively communicates and educates patients on community resource

referrals for non-emergent medical conditions.

Responds to customer billing inquiries, explaining billing and collection

procedures, as necessary, while exhibiting the highest levels of customer

service.

Exhibits a high level of empathy with the ability to effectively communicate with

patients and family members during traumatic events, while demonstrating

exceptional customer service skills.

Maintain a professional demeanor in a highly stressful and emotional

environment, to include crime, behavioral health and/or suffering patients in

addition to life/death situations.

Demonstrates ability to manage multiple, changing priorities in an effective and

organized manner, under stressful demands while maintaining exceptional

service.

Assists patients to nursing units by providing directions, personal escort,

and/or medical mobility assistance (ex; wheelchairs).

Updates and maintains patient database according to established procedures.

Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate (written and oral) with

individuals and groups of various backgrounds and educational levels in a high

stress environment.

Effectively communicates with physician group with ability to direct protocol

compliance for Medical Screening Exam while maintaining respectful

relationships.
High school diploma or equivalent is required

1 year of experience working in a healthcare environment is required

Experience working with patient records and charts is desired

Experience providing customer service to patients and their families is desired

Experience working in an Emergency Department is highly desired
