As a Planer Set Up 2 Operator at Columbia Falls Lumber, you will have the opportunity to:
Setup the planer tolerances to maximize quality and production in the planer.
Communicate closely with Filers, Forklift Operator and Graders.
Learn and operate planer feeder/hoist.
The Planer Set Up 2 Operator is responsible for operation of the planer including responds to quality requests made by the graders, adjusting planer and infeed speeds, making adjustments to the machinery to maximize quality and production, and performing knife changes. Operation of the feeder/hoist includes feeding rough, dry lumber into the planer in an unbroken stream to keep lumber in the planer at all times. Turning lumber to ensure maximum grade recovery, searching for foreign objects embedded in the lumber, scraping mud and rocks off the rough lumber, selecting and culling pieces that may jam the machine. Operates breakdown hoist, operates incoming and outgoing chains, operates cut-off saw, belts to sticker and club machines, and clears lumber break-ups and jams. Making minor repairs to the machinery and maintaining equipment, including but not limited to pre-shift inspections, blowing down equipment, monitoring chains for plug ups, jointing knives as required, grinding planer and chipper knives, and assisting millwrights.
When necessary, the Planer Set Up 2 Operator will assist with other production duties/positions in the sawmill and/or planer.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Experience: Prefer a minimum of two (2) years of experience operating as Planer Set-up. Experience in a board mill is a plus.
Additional Requirements: The job of Planer Set-Up 2 Heavy Duty job. Heavy Duty involves exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds continuously to move objects.
A sense of urgency in terms of maximizing production, and minimizing downtime is necessary in this type of manufacturing environment.
Tasks performed involve work with equipment and material that require familiarity with formal safety procedures and the following of these procedures in order to maintain the safety of the work environment.
Candidates must have the ability to interpret and apply verbal and/or written instructions, and have good hand eye coordination.
Willingness to work varying shifts, overtime and weekends/holidays The pre-employment process includes completing a medical evaluation, passing a drug screen and background check.
