The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is looking for classification specialist professional to assume the responsibilities of Correction Classifications Specialist. Job Duties :
Identify & recommend appropriate security level for newly received inmates in the Ohio Penal System (e.g., reviews court documents, criminal history, arrest & conviction records, FBI & BCI reports, prior commitment histories) & completes classification instrument & identify appropriate security level & recommends institution placement to the Bureau of Classification & Reception; coordinates transfers to effect placements as approved. Screen Inmates for eligibility of different programs. Keep daily reports required by Central Office. Interviews inmates to augment & clarify file information to ensure accuracy of inmate classification & placement (e.g., inform inmate of security level, discuss family concerns, parole eligibility) & observes/notes any interview aspects or occurrences which could result in change of classification level (e.g., violent behavior from inmate, admission of previous escape attempt, situations that would require higher security level as such as public notoriety); submits results of changes to supervisor for review & to Bureau of Classification for inmate transfer arrangements. Monitors activities of clerks to ensure accurate & timely recording, filing & generation of records, forms & paperwork pertinent to reception & placement of inmates (e.g., medical & psychological evaluations, ID information, interview information); monitors daily movement of inmates from reception to placement facilities. Responds to telephone & written inquiries from inmates & inmate families regarding placement; communicates with other agencies (e.g., courts, sheriff offices, attorneys) regarding inmate matters (e.g., sentencing, inconsistencies, separation due to violence).
Major Worker Characteristics:
- Completion of associate core program in criminal justice, sociology, social science, psychology or related field. -Or 18 mos. exp. in criminal justice, corrections, sociology, social work, &/or psychology or related field. -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Knowledge of agency rules & regulations governing penitentiary reception & security-level classification activities*; social sciences (e.g., social work, sociology, psychology, criminal justice); human relations; interviewing. Skill in word processing; operation of personal computer*. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; use proper research methods in gathering data; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; maintain accurate records; develop good rapport with inmates & conduct inmate interviews; handle sensitive inquiries from & contacts with inmates, their relatives, attorneys/prosecutors, judges & general public.
