Job Description:

The Technician is responsible for providing analytical support to product development, research, and manufacturing operations. Will also operate and maintain General Chemistry and Spectroscopy Laboratory equipment and ensure the generation of quality data. Responsibilities include:
Interacting with the assigned area lab leader, other analytical personnel, supervisors, research scientists, engineers, technicians, manufacturing and marketing personnel, and other external analytical personnel to clearly define the customer’s analytical requirements and schedule and accomplish activities that meet those requirements in a safe, quality-conscious manner
Preparing and running wet and elemental chemical analysis on plastics using potentiometric titrators, ICP-AES, UV-VIS, FTIR, elemental analyzers or similar equipment and providing analytical results for samples submitted to the laboratory
Collecting, correlating and interpreting data, making complex calculations, and keeping records
Performing radiographic imaging of materials
Analyzing and reporting information via computer software such as Word, Excel, and Access
Maintaining detailed, accurate records in lab notebooks and lab information mgmt system (LIMS)
Performing routine maintenance of equipment and/or coordinating maintenance with vendors
Independently performing technical problem solving on specific equipment and processes
Improving existing analytical procedures or developing new analytical procedures as needed
Planning and scheduling own work to meet laboratory clients’ information needs
Writing and updating laboratory procedures and technical reports
Training other technicians on specific equipment or processes, providing extensive guidance
Maintaining safe work environment for self and others; participating in safety audits / meetings
Applying statistical techniques to monitor laboratory testing performance
Performing other duties as assigned
Profile:
B.S. in Chemistry or related field with strong understanding of general chemistry fundamentals
Relevant technical experience in the operation of analytical lab equipment operation required; Hands-on experience and proficiency with ICP-AES, titrations, and/or FTIR strongly preferred
High comfort level with handling all manner of chemicals with excellent commitment to safety
Ability to handle a high volume of routine analysis with constant attention to detail
Ability to perform job duties and follow all protocols independently with minimal supervision
Strong oral/ written communications skills and experience with MS Word & Excel required
Experience with instrument troubleshooting and/or LIMS preferred
Experience in the chemical/plastics industry is a plus
NOTES: No relocation provided. This position is approved as an indefinite contract
role due to heavy departmental workload. There is no defined end date for the
contract period because the nature of the work is ongoing. The person in this
position will be payrolled through a third party agency while working on-site at
Solvay. When and if direct hire positions come available, contractors are allowed
to apply and be considered among internal candidates.
