Reporting to the Associate Director for Systems Administration, the Senior Database Administrator (Senior DBA) oversees the administration, design, quality assurance, implementation and maintenance of the databases associated with all production and non-production technology environments supported by IT Operations at Berklee College of Music.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field and at least six (6) years of professional experience in Database Administration, including SQL databases such as MySQL, Microsoft SQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL, and non-SQL databases such as Unidata, or equivalent experience.
A minimum of four (4) years experience with a SQL programming language such as T-SQL, including SQL queries and stored procedure
Experience with web-enabled enterprise applications, protocols and standards.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience with Windows and Linux/Unix server environments, including security, backup, recovery, automation, and tuning.
Knowledge of software development life cycles and methodologies.
Knowledge of IT project management tools and methodologies, including project charters, planning, work breakdown structures, risk analysis, etc.
Significant experience with systems and information security standards and implementation across heterogeneous environments.
Ability to plan and manage concurrent tasks, assignments, projects, and deadlines.
Ability to work independently and creatively, learn quickly, and solve complex problems in high-pressure situations.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written formats.
Strong organizational, administrative and documentation skills.
Experience as a project and team leader/supervisor.
Knowledge and Skills Preferred:
Professional DBA certification such as SQL Server 2008 MCTS, SQL Server 2012 MCSA, and/or Oracle 10g Administrator strongly preferred.
Experience working in an academic environment.
Serve as technical lead and principal point of contact and escalation for database administration, development, maintenance, security and database-related projects.
Develop and implement a comprehensive database strategy with College leadership to ensure alignment with Berklee’s strategic goals.
Lead database design reviews; troubleshoot database defects and deploy timely fixes; maintain regular and proactive database patches, updates and performance enhancements.
Consult with users to gather information about objectives, functions of service and database features to ensure that they meet end-user needs while maintaining compliance with security, best practices, and data availability requirements; analyze requirements and provide accurate effort assessments and delivery estimates.
Formulate and manage plans for data security, retention, recovery, monitoring, and response.
Advise on the development and delivery of technology and training on database design, implementation, management and security.
supervise other staff as assigned.
Serve as the Systems Administration team’s escalation point during incident response as necessary.
Write and maintain comprehensive documentation, including database dependencies, database inventory, basic database troubleshooting, and daily database operations documents.
Facilitate contracted vendor support.
Stay abreast of technological advances and continuously research better ways to accomplish tasks, integrate new technologies, and secure the environment.
Proactively update DBA skill set in support of technology integration and design.
Maintain a constructive, team-oriented and customer-focused attitude at all times and in all settings.
Advise CAB on maintenance impacting college databases.
Participate in inter-departmental cross training collaborations.
Follow Systems Administration/IT Operations Guidelines.
Other duties as assigned.
Possible Other Duties and Responsibilities:
May participate in inter-departmental projects as department representative.
May be assigned research projects at the discretion of the Associate Director for Systems Administration.
