Are you our next Senior Environmental Superintendent?
We are currently seeking a Senior Environmental Superintendent. This position can be based out of any of our Central Florida or Louisiana locations. The Senior Environmental Superintendent is the senior environmental operations technical expert and will lead environmental technical support teams (i.e. sampling, and monitoring) and will develop, implement and manage solutions for compliance with complex regulatory compliance and reporting obligations across the Phosphate Business Unit. This person will champion environmental excellence and will ensure systems are in place to achieve 100% compliance with internal and external environmental requirements. This role will also work to provide technical support on business critical environmental operations issues and will serve as the environmental operations focal point for compliance, permitting activities, and other environmental initiatives (i.e. surface water discharges, groundwater permitting, water supply, environmental impacts, agency information requests, ISO, etc.). This position will include a strong focus on data management solutions and regulatory reporting standardization across the Business Unit.
The Senior Environmental Superintendent must have the ability to blend technical expertise with strong interpersonal skills to successfully resolve the issues in their area of responsibility and must be able to mentor environmental professionals and assist in their technical and professional development. This position is high profile, and will routinely engage with senior level elected officials and regulators, Mosaic senior leaders, and other key stakeholders in the management of business critical environmental issues.
Additionally, the Senior Environmental Superintendent will partner with key stakeholders in Environmental Compliance, Public Affairs, Legal, Plant Operations, Mine Permitting and Reclamation, etc. to:
  • Develop and execute an advocacy strategy for site environmental issues.
  • Build and maintain a catalogue of compliance obligations and provide the tools necessary to meet those requirements. Provide permitting support as required.
  • Integrate environmental requirements into Operational objectives. Formulate environmental policies and procedures in alignment with Mosaic strategies.
Coordinate environmental reporting, compliance management strategies, and processes across the Business Unit to assure consistency. Leverage solutions to enhance environmental performance.
What will you do?
  • Serve as a Technical and Regulatory Expert for proactively managing environmental issues across the business unit. Responsible for creating an atmosphere of environmental excellence, and deliver strong environmental performance.
  • Reviews environmental incidents and audit findings, monitors leading and lagging indicators to detect performance trends. Assists with resolving compliance and reporting matters. Spotlights performance excellence, and addresses situations where performance fails to meet expectations. Champion good practice sharing, and leverage new ideas from outside the function / outside the company.
  • Coach, Lead and Direct environmental professionals (both direct reports and emerging talent within the business unit). Is a leader is all senses of the word. Creates a continuous improvement mindset. Partners with ISO, training and reporting teams to achieve business unit EH&S objectives. Produce timely, accurate, and precise reports and documentation as required. Negotiates and manage a variety of regulatory requirements. Manage direct reports’ activities. Responsible for development and implementation of capital and expense budgets at the site and business unit levels.
  • Support Mosaic’s global EH&S aspirations as a leader in the Phosphates, Distribution, and International environmental operations team. Take on special projects as required by the team, or assigned by the AVP Environment.
  • Represent Mosaic at appropriate levels with industry, community and professional associations to maintain and develop professional relationships, stay abreast of latest developments, and share good practices with other environmental professionals outside Mosaic.
Position Requirements:
What do you need for this role?
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Major in Environmental or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related field of study preferred.
  • Master’s degree/MBA preferred.
  • Professional Engineer or other environmental certification is a plus but not required.
  • 8+ years of progressive professional experience in EH&S.
  • Strong environmental technical skills, coupled with equally strong people leadership skills.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. Environmental laws and regulations, and an ability to interpret those requirements so that they can be translated into compliance activities.
  • Experience successfully negotiating complex compliance agreements and settlements.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing EH&S systems and processes across a large number of facilities.
  • Technical understanding of chemical manufacturing processes and mining operations.
  • Candidates with Six Sigma, Lean, or other continuous improvement skills are preferred.
  • Ability to anticipate and assess large-scale internal and external issues that may impact the business in the long-term and takes proactive action to mitigate risks.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Project.
  • Database applications.
  • Strong verbal, written and listening communication skills, including excellent presentation, facilitation and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work with all levels of management in a matrix environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills dealing with all levels of employees, customers, and management.
  • Ability to impact and effect positive change with flexible, open-minded, positive approach.
  • Excellent qualitative and quantitative analytical skills to identify and solve a wide range of business problems. Ability to manage multiple issues and clearly articulate principles, concerns, and solutions for resolution of these issues.
  • Must be able to articulate the opportunity, build consensus for solution sets, and effectively implement. Proven ability to apply deep knowledge of trends and best practices in a manner that ensures exceptional performance and results.
  • Ability to anticipate and assess large-scale internal and external issues that may impact the business in the long-term and takes proactive action to mitigate risks.
  • Experience effectively articulating ideas and concepts to a large audience including senior management.
  • Must possess excellent analytical, coaching and consulting skills.
  • Proven strategic planning, leadership, and project management capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to lead through influence, and network.
  • Ability to create effective partnerships at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent business acumen and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with change management preferred.
  • Committed to customer focus and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to interact with community members, professional organizations, regulators, conservation organizations and elected officials to promote Mosaic’s interests and good will.
  • Ability to travel at least 20 – 40% - could be greater depending upon business needs.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
