This role in Lexington, Ky. proofreads legal documents to ensure accuracy, proper grammatical structure, and conformity of style, usage and format. Compares and indicates differences between legal documents, checks other proofreaders’ corrections, and answers questions and offers guidance to firm staff regarding document editing and proofreading. Assists with Document Services workload as time permits.

Successful candidate will carefully read original copy and mark any grammatical, typographical, or compositional errors with standard proofreaders’ marks, and review corrected version for accuracy and to ensure all corrections have been made. May make suggestions with respect to grammar and punctuation changes and recommend new language. Reviews documents for use of legal terminology as well as citations for conformity to correct and uniform system of citation; reviews documents for the use and definition of defined terms and conducts cross-reference checks to ensure that cross-references are used correctly. Uses the firm’s redlining applications to compare and mark differences between two or more documents, and checks accuracy of tables of contents and indices as well as headers, footers, chapter titles, copyright information, proper fonts and page numbering. Reviews and formats converted documents including EDGAR filings. Provides support to Document Services Specialists as time permits and uses the firm’s standard desktop applications and other specialized Document Services applications to create and/or revise work product as requested.

Position requires an Associate’s Degree, technical degree in Secretarial Skills, or equivalent technical knowledge; Bachelor’s Degree preferred and 2-3 years of proofreading or secretarial experience, preferably within a law firm environment. Successful candidate will have excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and proofreading skills; familiarization with legal terminology, phrases and usage and knowledge of proofreading symbols; and general knowledge of Windows-based computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheet, database, document management, presentation and diagramming/charting software programs. Must have strong communications, interpersonal, teamwork and excellent customer service skills and ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of personnel, as well as the ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments, use initiative and judgment to accomplish results, work under pressure and produce extremely accurate and detailed work within established timeframe and quality standards. Good visual acuity and ability to sit for long periods of time to review and correct copy.
