North Seattle’s Basic & Transitional Studies Division is currently seeking individuals to maintain a roster of qualified, experienced and dynamic ESL professionals interested in and available for part-time teaching positions that may become available within the program. In anticipation of possible openings throughout the academic year, applications are accepted continuously for temporary part-time appointments. Positions may become available at any time and are typically filled on a quarterly basis.

We are currently looking for qualified instructors to teach in either our intensive ESL program (IEP) for international students on student visas who plan to study in American colleges or wish to prepare for bilingual careers in their home countries or in our immigrant ESL program for students who are immigrants, refugees or US citizens.

The successful candidate is able to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, possesses superior ESL instructional skills to meet the needs and expectations of students in a variety of settings, has experience teaching ESL in a community college, college, or university setting, is proficient using technology in instruction, and demonstrates a strong commitment to the TESOL profession.
In addition to the SCCD on-line application form, applicants must submit the following in order to be considered:
  • Cover letter explaining how you meet the minimum required and preferred experience and qualifications, and why you are interested in teaching at North Seattle.
  • Current Resume or CV: Include dates of employment periods and education (candidates who do not provide dates will not be considered). For teaching experience listed on resume, indicate whether positions were full-time or part-time.
  • List of three professional references with telephone and email contact information, including at least one supervisor from within the past five years.

Essential Functions:
  • Teach between one (1) and three (3) ESL classes per quarter (classes may be daily, or two to four evenings a week) and must follow established course outlines and curriculum.
  • Provide course syllabi and information sheets for each class taught.
  • Generate lesson plans, learning assessments, mid-term progress and final grade reports, and other required documents within the guidelines of the NSCC program.
  • Review student work, provide feedback and return assignments in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records.
  • Conference as needed with individual students outside of class.
  • Work collaboratively with other faculty, advisors and staff.
  • Keep up-to-date with program and college communications and announcements.
  • Attend quarterly faculty meetings.

Required Education, Experience & Abilities:
  • At least six (6) months’ recent experience teaching in an intensive English or academic English program for adult international or immigrant students, at an accredited institution of higher learning in the U.S.,
  • Experience teaching all levels of ESL from beginning to advanced, and all skill areas including reading, writing/composition, grammar, listening, speaking & pronunciation.
  • Experience with testing, assessment, and evaluation of student learning.
  • Experience with the use of computers and technology in teaching ESL.
  • Native speaker fluency in both spoken and written English.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
Minimum Required Academic Qualifications:

NOTE: All degrees listed below must have been granted by an approved accredited college or university.

M.A., M.Ed., or M.A.T. in English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), or Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)


Masters in Applied English Linguistics, Masters in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) or Second Language Teaching (SLT) with emphasis on and significant coursework in English language acquisition.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years full-time equivalent experience teaching ESL in an intensive English program (either in US or overseas).
  • One (1) year full-time equivalent overseas experience teaching English as a foreign language.
  • Experience learning a foreign language.
  • Experience teaching ESL elective courses such as TOEFL (iBT) preparation, cross-cultural communication, American culture, etc.
  • Experience working in the Washington State community college system.
  • ESL curriculum development experience.
  • Experience with ESL placement testing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to on-going professional development in the field of TESOL.
