Title: Middleware/Open Systems Engineer
Reports to: Engineering Manager
Summary: This is an IT engineering position responsible for enterprise-wide design, configuration and administration of URBN Corporation’s Middleware and Open Systems environments. The position requires a strong background and previous experience in leading technical projects involving design, configuration and integration of Linux Based, Web and J2EE Application environments as well as the physical infrastructure tiers, which comprise those environments (Web, Application, Database).
Design, Build, Configure and administer Linux Based systems, associated application services and interfaces, and supporting infrastructure tiers in accordance with project requirements.
Coordinate with vendors, partners and solution providers to document project requirements as they pertain to specific initiatives and ensure technical best practices are upheld.
Exercise independent judgment and make recommendations on topics of high technical complexity and importance; prioritize and address many concurrent items and issues
Recommend and Build sufficient monitoring profiles for Linux Based systems to ensure Operational Teams are adequately equipped to identify and troubleshoot infrastructure problems as needed. Support IT Operations Team and Web Hosting Operations as needed on critical service impacting issues.
Assess overall health of existing Linux Based environments, forecast needs, and identify/address potential problems, with the goal of avoiding or minimizing interruption of service
Work with other Engineering team members to develop and modify infrastructure policies, guidelines, standards, procedures, and documentation as they pertain to Linux and Application Environments
Ability to work quickly under pressure and assume 24/7 ownership/responsibility for critical systems if necessary
Highly technical resource with strong Linux, Web and Application Server performance and tuning skills. Deep knowledge of the HTTP protocol and experience supporting critical web application servers
Strong and recent experience with Red Hat Linux and SuSe Linux Administration - installation, configuration and troubleshooting
Relevant experience creating standardized Linux server builds
Relevant experience with Linux authentication, filesystems, databases, web servers
Experience installing, configuring and supporting Apache web servers in a production environment. LAMP Server Experience preferred (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP)
Experience installing, configuring and supporting Application Server Environments (Websphere, JBoss and Tomcat)
Experience building and supporting hardware and software load balanced/clustered environments
Working Knowledge of Clustering software such as Red Hat Clusters, Linux-HA, Microsoft Clusters
Experience with Hardware Load Balancing Solutions (Cisco ACE 4710 and CSS 11501 preferred)
Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, ESXi and Virtual Center)
Hands-on experience and excellent knowledge of servers hardware; problem solving skills with server applications in both windows and Linux environments
Working Knowledge of NetApp and EMC storage technologies (NAS/SAN, Fiber Channel & iSCSI)
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must possess ability to work independently and in a team environment
Must possess excellent investigative and problem solving abilities
Good level of understanding of DNS, LDAP, FTP/sFTP, DHCP and backup software
Perl/VB scripting capabilities - an advantage
