The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), a highly respected and diverse public research university deeply embedded in its urban mission, seeks a Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) and Provost who can join the Chancellor in sustaining and furthering UIC's scholarly excellence, national prominence and community engagement. In less than three decades, UIC has transformed itself into one of the top 60 research universities in the United States. Its students reflect the diverse, global nature of Chicago and other great cities around the country and the world. Its research and scholarly output is based upon working within, across and between disciplines to answer important societal questions and contribute to the scientific, social, political, environmental, health and economic well-being of our modern society. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced, visionary leader to help sustain and advance the University's commitments to greater diversity; more effective undergraduate, graduate and professional education; integration of new and existing scholarship among the different disciplines and the graduate and professional education.

The VCAA & Provost reports directly to the Chancellor and is the second-in-command and chief academic officer for the UIC campus. The VCAA & Provost is the Chancellor's principal advisor on campus budget matters, including working with the Chancellor on budget planning, preparing budget requests and implementing the annual state appropriations. The VCAA will provide strategic and operational leadership to this maturing urban research university and will work with all of the deans and the other Vice Chancellors to lead it through the challenges and opportunities of the coming years to achieve its vision. This is an institution that began with the strong support of the City of Chicago and is poised to be the major educational contributor to the city's global economic strength.

The VCAA & Provost can expect to join a dynamic group of leaders on campus and work closely with the Chancellor, who reports directly to the President of the University of Illinois. Paula Allen-Meares joined UIC in January 2009 as Chancellor and John Corbally Presidential Professor. She is currently the principal investigator of the Skillman Good Neighborhoods Grant. Michael J. Hogan began his service as President of the University of Illinois in July 2010. He also serves as the Harry E. Preble Chair and professor in the Department of History on the Urbana campus.

The search is being led by Michael A. Baer with Jackie Mildner.
