The Histology Aide is responsible for supporting the department with all clerical and ancillary duties in keeping all equipment ready to run for patient output. While maintaining job functions, the histology assistant is to progress in their learning of the regulations (CLIA, CAP) which the laboratory functions by and to gradually (after minimum 9 months as assistant) learn and incorporate the duties of the Histology Technician I into their daily routine.
Histology Aide duties include, but are not limited to, performing equipment maintenance, laboratory inventory, ordering supplies, receiving and unpacking packages, and other technical procedures performed in the lab such as formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue macro-dissection, fresh frozen tissue chipping, and RNA or DNA extractions. Molecular Lab Assistants support Histology Technicians and Histology Technologists. This position works under the direction of the supervisor and follows standard laboratory procedures and policies.
Job Responsibilities : Handles, prepares, and uploads stainers; conducts dehydrating and cover slips slides utilizing manual or automatic systems. Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, maintains, and shuts down laboratory equipment & accessories, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments, daily and weekly as required. Preps stainers with bulk fluids. Responsible for filing, tracking, retrieval, and accurate record keeping. Receives product and registers bulk items. Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials. Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; prints labels as appropriate. Records in laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared. Logs appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system. Verifies match of surgical case number. Responsible for Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) charts for all laboratory equipment. Maintains Supply Inventory, including package receiving and supply chain requests, and submitting orders to Purchasing department, in accordance with established policies and procedures. Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support Histology Technicians and/or Histology Technologists as required. Accepts other duties as assigned.
Requirements : Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

a. High School diploma or equivalent required.
b. One to three years experience in general laboratory operations and one year experience as waiter/waitress preferred.
c. Clinical Laboratory Sciences (AAS) certification preferred. Physical Demands
a. Will work at a computer some of the time as well as need to keep inventory and ordering records requiring the use of copiers, fax machines, and PDF scanners.
b. Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
c. Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
d. Must possess ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
e. Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
f. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
g. May have exposure to high noise levels in the data center, fumes and bio-hazardous material in the lab environment. Exposure to formaldehyde, xylene, DAB and alcohol which emit fumes. The formaldehyde, xylene, and DAB are carcinogenic.
h. May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents. Other
