Walter Payton College Preparatory High School
Dynamic Principal Sought for Chicagos Premier College Preparatory Public High School
We Nurture Leaders is the motto that guides the students and faculty at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School. This selective enrollment public school serves some of the most accomplished candidates from throughout the city, including a substantial number of special needs students. Our highly motivated and diverse student body comes from over 130 public and 50 private schools from every corner of Chicago. Typically, several thousand students apply each year for the 200 spaces in our freshman class.
Our exceptional faculty, a majority with advanced degrees, supports a unique Math, Science and World Language curriculum. Core classes are offered only at the Honors or Advanced Placement levels. In addition, the school has pioneered a unique seminar program that sets aside one day each week to offer students an opportunity to delve into non-traditional subjects in small, highly participatory settings for several hours at a time. The seminar offerings are many and constantly change based on the interests of the students and faculty. In a similar vein, Payton encourages and seeks to promote world travel opportunities for as many of its students as possible, organizing four international trips or more each year to such diverse locations as China, South Africa, France, Italy, Canada, and Central America. Teachers and students also participate extensively in a full range of clubs, sports, and community-based outreach programs that have resulted in winning several State and City championships ranging from volleyball to debate, and the first-ever Illinois State Math Championship by any Chicago public high school, as well as a choir that recently performed in China.
During its brief, ten-year history, Payton has been recognized as one of the leading high schools in the nation as evidenced by its receipt of the Presidential Blue Ribbon Award for Academic Achievement, U.S. News & World Reports ranking of Payton among the top 50 High Schools in the nation, and most recently, Paytons receipt of the INTEL Star Innovator Award for the best math program in the country.
