The Principal Engineer, Smart Grid - Distribution Automation will advance distribution feeder design (including automated voltage control, fault detection Isolation & Restoration & advanced protection systems) within Smart Grid COE, will partner with several other teams & cross functionally within Energy. They offer creative solutions to customer’s problems & challenges, provide thought leadership for industry standards, & partner with utilities to plan future grid projects & investments.

Essential Responsibilities Provide critical knowledge and direction for the Smart Grid COE on customer projects involving Distribution Automation (DA) and advanced distribution design, up to and including development, deployment, investment, and decision analysis

Serve as a primary Distribution Automation and design expert for the Smart Grid COE

Analyze current DA applications of customers, understand how these assets fit with other Smart Grid applications, and create appropriate DA economic ROI and business cases

Understand – and be able to guide the modeling of distribution systems and their performance

Coach electric utilities and power industry clients on designing DA programs

Support Marketing and Sales activities including active help identifying clients and RFP’s

Consult with peers on Smart Grid projects related to DA, and coach peers on DA systems and applications

Provide expertise and industry leadership and vision to support DA Grid applications

Actively participate in thought leadership activities focused on DA developments, including playing leading roles in various industry sponsored events and conferences

Keep track of DA trends and developments to ensure Smart Grid COE maintains external focus and leadership position

Partner with internal stakeholders, as needed

Actively participate in a working environment where teamwork, quality, customer service and innovation are critical

Qualifications/Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Electric Power System Engineering or Electrical Engineering

Minimum of 10 years of experience in the electric power industry, including experience with electric utilities and in energy consulting, and a minimum of 10 years of distribution system automation and design experience

Minimum of 5 years of hands on experience with DA applications

Desired Characteristics Familiarity with DA system and technology industry providers

Demonstrated thought leadership experience in DA

Master’s Degree in Electric Power System Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Business Administration

Minimum of 20 years of experience in the electric power industry, including experience with electric utilities and in energy consulting, in addition to a minimum of 10 years of DA experience

Experience establishing strategic alliances in the power industry

Hands on experience with DA applications

IEEE active membership

CIGRE active membership

Strong project management and technical writing skills

Attention to details and strong analytical and problem solving skills to resolve difficult technical issues

Desire and ability to work in a fun and fast paced, consulting oriented, team environment

IMLP or EEDP grad, and Six Sigma Green Belt or higher certification (GE employees only)

Strong leadership skills and influencing skills

Excellent interpersonal communication skills (e.g. ability to effectively communicate with all levels of customer staff)

Strong presentation skills
