Within Division of State Fire Marshal, schedules & conducts fire safety inspections of buildings (e.g. group homes, nursing homes, hospitals, childcare facilities, hotels & motels, schools, places of public assembly, explosive magazines, bulk plants, flammable liquid storage tanks, fireworks facilities and new construction sites), to ensure compliance with applicable sections of Ohio Revised and Ohio Fire Code & drafts notice of violations & citations (in accordance with Section 3737.41 & 3737.42 of the ORC) for noted violations & conducts follow-up inspections to ensure corrections have been made. Attends meetings with owners or operators of buildings, contractors, architects and code officials to discuss violations and method of correction. Assists local fire officials with inspections & enforcement when requested; investigates complaints of Fire Safety violations; attends conferences, seminars, fire service meetings & other related gatherings; prepares & maintains required reports & records; testifies in hearings and court as necessary; assists in preparation of proposals for additions, revisions to codes and standards. Trains new fire safety inspectors in Bureau policies & procedures; prepares and delivers educational presentations on various fire safety & prevention subjects throughout the state as assigned. Performs related duties as assigned (e.g., answers telephone inquiries; conducts research of codes and standards to prepare citations and provide answers to inquiries).
Certificate evidencing satisfactory completion of fire safety inspector training program issued by state superintendent of public instruction, per Section 3303.07 of revised code of revised code; 12 mos. exp. in conducting fire safety inspections for compliance with Ohio revised code, Ohio fire code, Ohio basic building code, referenced standards & other state agency rules; valid driver’s license.

Knowledge of Ohio revised code, Ohio fire code & Ohio basic building code referenced standards & related rules; public relations. Ability to recognize code violations & take necessary corrective action; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; handle routine & sensitive inquiries from & contacts with building owners & occupants & other government officials.
