Position Summary

Under general supervision will be responsible for the provision of recreational services for participants with disabilities for the Parks and Recreation Department; to ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the organization, coordination and lead structured recreational activities for therapeutic/inclusion program participants.
  • Assist participants with the activities and with any accommodations needed; utilize appropriate techniques to motivate and encourage client participation.
  • Supervise program participants ensuring their safety; conduct on-site inspections ensuring proper facility maintenance and safety requirements are adhered to.
  • Observe clients physical and behavioral status and participation in activities and relay progress reports to manager and other staff members.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of program goals and objectives; monitor program to ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Prepare statistical and participant progress reports as needed.
  • Assist in budget preparation, planning, purchasing, and administrative duties, record keeping, and tracking attendance of program participants.
  • Arrange transportation for Inclusion participants to off-site activities as necessary. Transport clients within a facility to activities or in a vehicle to transport clients to outside activities.
  • Schedule and perform general maintenance, ensure equipment upkeep to ensure clean, efficient and safe operation of equipment and surrounding areas.
  • Track mandatory inclusion training requirements and provide reports when needed.
  • Make recommendations to the Inclusion Manager regarding changes to the established Accommodation Plan.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years of age and/or High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of six (6) months recreation or child care experience working with people with disabilities. OR completion of 30 college credit hours in Physical Education, Education, Recreation or related field.
  • Must have the ability to plan and prepare organized structured recreational activities; instruct, motivate and lead program participants.
  • Must have basic knowledge to recognize the nature and symptoms of physical, mental and cognitive disabilities; understand the concept of recreational inclusion.
  • Must have the ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English when dealing with internal and external parties, to prepare accurate, concise, complete, and informative written materials.
  • Must have the ability to work under the conditions and with the equipment described.
  • Ability to analyze data; present ideas effectively; communicate policies and procedures to department directors, employees, and the general public; and obtain and maintain the confidence and cooperation of others.
  • Ability to manage projects and personnel effectively and to work productively either independently or as a team member or team leader.
  • Ability to maintain objectivity and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of complex and potentially sensitive projects
  • Proficiency in the use of computers including word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics software.
  • Ability to effectively lead and train others.


  • Supplemental Information:

    Screening and Compliance

    The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:
  • Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  • Employee must possess a valid New Mexico Driver’s License by employment date and retain a valid NM Driver’s License while employed in this position.
  • Employee must obtain Red Cross certification in First Aid and CPR within 90 days of hire.

  • Working Conditions
  • Works with general direction and with select groups.
  • Work performed both indoors (60%) and outdoors (40%).
  • Worker will be exposed to natural weather conditions when working outdoors.
  • Duties will be performed on sand, gravel, asphalt, grass, wood floors and tile, all of which may be wet or dry.
  • Required to work variable hours.
  • Work hazards are those normally encountered in the instruction or participation in sports activities.

  • Equipment, Tools and Materials
  • Sports equipment such as used in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, etc., and various arts and crafts supplies are utilized in the performance of essential duties.
  • Equipment and materials typically used in the performance of clerical duties include telephone, computer, copier and basic office supplies.
  • Equipment typically used in performance of maintenance duties includes mops, brooms, buffer and window cleaning supplies.

  • Must have the ability to follow instructions and to take responsibility for assigned duties.
  • Must be able to apply management skills in order to plan, direct, promote, and coordinate recreational programs and activities.
  • Must be able to think clearly while communicating with others and promoting recreation activities and programs.
  • Must be able to plan and organize own work activities, as well as the work activities of subordinates.
  • Must be able to apply principles of logic, scientific or medical thinking to define the problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must possess the adaptability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another task of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Physical Functions

  • Work involves standing, walking, and running up to 85% of the working day.
  • Work involves being physically able to participate in the various sports and recreational activities described.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally; 10 to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Must be able to bend at the waist and twist/rotate frequently.
  • Must be able to work with arms bent or extended from body or overhead, and be able to push/pull with arms frequently.
  • Must be able to crouch and kneel occasionally.
  • Must be able to coordinate use of hands, feet, ears and eyes in performance of essential duties, and to use hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate various equipment and materials used to perform essential duties.
