The Registered Nurse in this area assumes the responsibility of team leader utilizing the nursing process in planning, executing, and evaluating the nursing care given to the surgical patient during the intra-operative period. The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to identify patient and family requirements relative to age specific needs. Under the direction of the department supervisor, the Operating Room nurse is responsible for direct patient care in both the scrub and circulating nurse roles. The Operating Room nurse is also responsible for providing professional nursing care within other assigned units of the Surgery Center as needed.

Demonstrates competency upon hire in performing all related job tasks/functions.
Demonstrates cooperative work attitude toward and with co-employees, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.
Maintains licensure and continuing education units (CEUs) as required by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing.
Orthopaedic experience required.
Maintains certification in BLS, and ACLS
Orients and trains new staff as needed.
Cross-trains in other Center areas as needed
Maintains working knowledge and comfortable with computer use.
Maintains regular attendance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Functions in the OR suite as a circulator
Utilizes specialized nursing knowledge, nursing process and judgment while giving direct or indirect care.
Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual practice.
Recognizes the importance of teamwork.
Respects patient’s right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
Understands the critical nature of release of patient information issues.
Assists anesthesia personnel with peri-operative care of patient as needed.
Collects and labels lab specimens accurately for transport to lab.
Assures sponge, needle count conducted according to Center policy.
Monitors patient care activities continuously for breaks in aseptic technique.
Assures proper positioning of patient for procedure.
Maintains accurate records of controlled substances.
Provides a safe, efficient and supportive patient atmosphere.
Assesses physical and emotional needs of patients and implements appropriate nursing interventions.
Attends required inservice education, meetings and participates in committees as requested.
Knowledgeable of and in compliance with administrative, medical, and nursing policies and procedures.
Reports and completes appropriate forms for incidents to patient, visitors, and employees.
Reports to supervisor needed repairs or maintenance of equipment, surgery center, or building.
Responsible for organization and neatness of work area.
Completes various charting forms in the medical record accurately and consistently.
Knowledgeable and responds to emergency situations (i.e., cardiac arrest, malignant hyperthermia, adverse drug reactions, fire, etc.).
Responsible for assisting in turnover of OR suites.
Assists in supplying and stocking inventory, utilizing par level method.
Assists in maintaining central supply in an orderly fashion with an adequate inventory of sterile supplies and instruments.
Cleans, correctly sorts and identifies, wraps and sterilizes all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment.
Demonstrates understanding of OSHA programs including hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens.
Performs other assigned duties.
Job Qualifications include:
Education Required: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing
Education Preferred: Completion of or actively pursuing a BSN degree
License and Certifications:
Current licensure as an RN in the state of TN
Current certification as a BLS Healthcare Provider issued by the American Heart Association and ACLS certification.
Skills and Abilities
Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.
Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50 lbs.
Experience Required: Minimum of at least six months to one year orthopaedic experience.
