DEAN

School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) seeks nominations
and applications for the position of Dean, School of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics (NS&M). The School consists of the
Departments of Molecular and Cell Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences,
Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and Science/ Mathematics
Education.

The elements of NS&M formed the core of the Southwest
Institute of Advanced Studies, created by the founders of Texas
Instruments in the 1960's. This research institute was given to the
State of Texas in 1969 to create The University of Texas at Dallas,
a component of The University of Texas System. During UT Dallas' 40
years of growth, the natural sciences have remained at the center
of the university's development, in concert with major growth in
engineering and management programs and the emergence of strong but
sharply focused programs in the humanities, social sciences, and
brain and behavioral sciences.

NS&M departments offer six doctoral programs, thirteen
masters programs, and fourteen bachelors programs. The number of
tenure/tenure-track faculty holding appointments in NS&M
currently totals 90, with university plans calling for the
appointment of up to twenty new faculty members during the next
five years. The faculty members of NS&M maintain active
research programs with significant external funding. UT Dallas'
strategic plan calls for continued significant growth in externally
funded research, up from the FY2010 total direct and indirect
expenditures of more than $42 million, and NS&M is expected to
continue to play a significant role in this effort.

The priorities of the next Dean of the School of Natural
Sciences will include guiding the recruitment and hiring of new
faculty who can provide leadership for expanded research
activities, prioritizing investment decisions in research areas,
leading School-wide efforts to secure major interdisciplinary
multi-investigator grants, and fostering synergistic research
collaborations between NS&M faculty and faculty from other UT
Dallas schools and from other Dallas-area institutions of research
and education. The new Dean should have a record of scholarly
achievement appropriate for a tenured faculty appointment in one of
the School's Departments. Desired qualifications include
administrative experience at the equivalent of at least
departmental leadership, a record of successful extra-mural
research funding, and a comprehensive perspective on national
priorities in science research and education.

UT Dallas is located at the convergence of Dallas, Richardson
and Plano, in an environment of residential suburbs and office
parks of major knowledge-intensive businesses. Offering a broad
assortment of bachelor, master and doctoral degree programs, UT
Dallas currently enrolls approximately 17,000 students, 35% at the
post-baccalaureate level, and is ranked consistently as one of the
three most selective public universities in Texas with respect to
freshman admissions and national scholastic aptitude scores.

Review of applicants will begin immediately and will continue
until the position is filled. Indication of gender and ethnicity
for affirmative action statistical purposes is requested as part of
the application.

Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae with a list of at
least five academic or professional references via the online
application system at http://go.utdallas.edu/ptg101216 .

The University of Texas at Dallas is an Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants
will receive consideration for employment without regard to race,
color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, citizenship
status, Vietnam era or special disabled veteran's status, or sexual
orientation.
