This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Analyst Programmer, competency level 1 position for Information Services - Enterprise Computing Services at Oregon State University (OSU).
This position joins a staff of database managers and system administrators providing Oracle database administration and management for the core university administrative systems. Additionally, this position will be responsible for support and maintain Linux and Windows servers running administrative applications for the University serving the State of Oregon.
The employee in this position will build on a strong existing knowledge of computer science and database fundamentals to supplement the work of the senior database staff in managing and supporting the university's core administrative databases. This is an entry level position intended for rapid growth. The employee in this position will be expected to quickly pick up and support new technology and adopt increasing levels of responsibility in all aspects of database functionality including design, implementation, backup, security, middleware integration and management, data exchange with data warehouse and ODS and EDW components, managing space utilization, availability, recovery, redundancy and use of system resources.
This position works with teams of developers, analysts and business contacts to ensure that data availability and performance needs are met and that jobs are successfully scheduled and executed.
This position functions within a team based environment under the direct guidance of a senior level database administrator.
Employee must occasionally work early mornings, nights or weekends to perform maintenance and corrective actions at times when the computer systems are not otherwise busy.
Employee must also share standby and on-call duty with other members of the team.
This position involves primarily office-based work directly related to OSU's general business operations.
30% - Database Administration:
Under guidance from senior DBA staff, perform database administration activities as assigned. Such activities may include:
Modify Oracle databases as required to accommodate local requirements.
Implement successive releases of database management system.
Implement successive releases of Banner.
Conduct performance monitoring and adjustment of DBMS
Develop physical and logical storage requirements
Back up and recover data
Maintain excellent security, applying appropriate standards and addressing issues promptly
Maintain efficient operation.
30% - Linux/Unix and Windows system administration, under guidance and in consultation with senior team members
Proactively install, maintain, patch and add features to operating systems
Diagnose and resolve hardware failures
Maintain production operations
Monitor and accommodate capacity and performance needs
Respond to support calls and requests for updates and changes from users, programmers and project managers as appropriate
20% - Application administration, under guidance and in consultation with senior team members
Install, configure and maintain administrative applications running on supported servers.
Integrate application components.
Investigate and resolve performance and functionality issues.
Consult with and submit requests to vendors, as appropriate.
Schedule and coordinate code updates.
15% Diagnosing and correcting Database problems:
Under guidance from senior DBA staff, address issues as assigned. Such activities may include:
Respond to user problems and recommend or implement solutions
Analyze and correct DBMS problems
Tune, configure and address infrastructure and operating system to support DBMS
Investigate, diagnose and resolve performance, security, access and integration issue
Attend meetings with users, vendors, systems software and programming staff regarding DBMS issues.
5% - Team work and other duties as assigned
Participate as a member of the Systems Software team. Time is spent attending meetings, participating in team decision making, implementing solutions to team problems as well as assisting with other team functions.
Consult with peers.

This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in systems analysis and related programming support functions generally obtained by a bachelor's degree in computer science, or an equivalent amount of training and applied experience.
Solid fundamental knowledge of database design and computer operating systems, including system components and resource utilization.
Experience configuring and managing a server, preferably Linux.
Experience setting up, configuring and accessing a database.
Strong interpersonal, teamwork and verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
Ability to learn and adopt new technologies quickly and effectively
This position is designated as a critical, security-sensitive or safety-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be deemed fit for duty at placement and while serving in the position.
Because of the complexity of the primary systems involved in this position, college level training in Business and/or Computer Science is highly desirable.
Direct work experience with the following a plus: Oracle database structure and design, Oracle RAC, ODS/EDW solutions, Banner middleware, SunGard software, computer hardware, clustering, shared storage solutions, system and database backup methodologies, network infrastructure and monitoring tools.
Experience with C, HTML, Java, SQL, PHP, LDAP, Apache, Tomcat and Perl desired.
Work experience using on-line, interactive computing systems, use of MS Office software, and the skill to touch type.
