Primary Function & Major Responsibilities The following responsibilities are unique to the Peer Specialist position: Uses experiences with personal recovery in assisting and supporting mental health patients in navigating the mental health system, accessing and using existing resources effectively and supporting client self determination and recovery.Demonstrates evidence of facilitating patient’s individual recovery process.Provides direct service, including social and emotional support, coupled with instrumental support to patients of the Emergency Department and inpatient mental health units.Understands the concept of and is committed to their personal recovery by demonstrating behaviors consistent with recovery approach.Provides training and education to other medical and interdisciplinary team on Recovery model including Community Resources, Advocacy Organizations, and Peer Support and Psychiatric advance directives: advocacy, information and referral.Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of the job.Performs all other related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Peer Recovery Specialist through the MN Dept of Human Services
No minimum years of experience requiredSpecial Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The Peer Recovery Specialist is an individual who has a unique perspective because of his/her own experience with serious and persistent mental illness. The Peer Recovery Specialists is expected to perform duties in the Emergency Department and the inpatient mental health unit. The position involves providing peer support and counseling for patients and advocating for the needs of patients. The job can be stressful since Peer Recovery Specialist will be helping to resolve conflicts between patients, staff, and others. The employee may also be exposed to potentially dangerous and unpredictable behaviors caused by people experiencing symptoms of acute psychiatric illnesses. This position will work up to 20 hours per week (up to half-time). Hours are flexible, as set by the supervisor. Evening and weekend work may be required.Working knowledge of mental health system including access points of care, legal interventions, and current community mental health and crisis service;Demonstrated awareness of criteria standards for accessing county mental health services and benefits;Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships;Effectively engage and establish a therapeutic relationship with mental health patients;Ability to communicate effectively verbally and to write concisely, while expressing thoughts clearly, and develop ideas in logical sequence;Gather information through questioning or observing individuals;Solid knowledge base of mental health statutes, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing provision of care for mental health patients;Consistently establish rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds;Recognize and maintain professional boundaries while engaging patients in their supportive role;Capacity to gather information examining records and documents;Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.Regular/Temporary
