A BS (or BA) degree in biology field and four full years of related experience or a combination of education and experience totaling eight years.
Experience in genetics, molecular biology techniques, media/reagent preparation, microbial culture preparation and maintenance, and work with vertebrate animals.
Preferred-
BS degree in biological sciences with additional laboratory experience in genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology, including biological databases (e.g., DNA sequence analysis/comparisons.) Experience in both research and instructional laboratories an added bonus.
Candidate must have demonstrated strong organizational and communication skills, proven good record keeping, proven ability to work with a wide variety of people, and good problem-solving skills. Must be proven able to meet unmovable deadlines (class starts.) Expect a proven team player.
Duties/Responsibilities
35% Organize, set-up and take down experimental and demonstration material for assigned courses; pre-run experiments; includes maintenance of microbial cultures, laboratory rooms, and equipment such as pH meters, microscopes, thermal cyclers, spectrophotometers, incubators, centrifuges, gel apparati, micropipettors. microtiter plate readers, computers, animal and plant cultures (plants, fish, and invertebrates.) Initial duties will be supporting the design and offerings of existing Biol 1009 course which serves ~1700 students per year and a course in development which includes environmental biology.
20% Order and prepare media, reagents, microbial cultures, specimens, software, and other materials for class use. Maintain catalog of materials available.
25% Assist faculty, TAs and students during the course, including some independent student projects.
10% Supervise student help who assist the instructional lab staff.
5% Pre-run new experiments, including researching and reading relevant literature, doing feasibility studies for scaling up an experiment to a large course.
5% Assist other instructional lab staff as needed and other duties as assigned to allow efficient functioning of instructional labs.
