Description

Position Summary

Repair heavy-duty trucks and trailers according to company standards and procedures. Train new employees on company procedures regarding service shop functions and inspect orders for completion before presentation to customer.

Essential Tasks

1. Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunction(s).
2. Perform inspections and preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
3. Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications and filter replacements.
4. Repair, reline, replace, and adjust brakes (air, hydraulic, electric and brake accessories).
5. Test drive vehicles and test components using proper equipment.
6. Troubleshoot and repair suspension systems including leaf and coil spring systems, and Hendrickson walking beam type suspension systems.
7. Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, exhaust systems, steering systems , air conditioning, PTO”S and custom exhaust systems.
8. Adjust, remove and replace clutches and drivelines.
9. Overhaul, troubleshoot and repair diesel and gasoline engines.
10. Troubleshoot and repair fuel tanks, fifth wheels, trailer hitches, pintle hooks, auxiliary axles and frames.
11. Perform tandem alignment, front axle king pin and bushing repairs.
12. Perform basic aluminum and steel wire welding.
13. Review service story provided by service writers and determine tasks that need to be accomplished in order for the order to be completed in a timely manner.
14. Train new service shop employees on company procedures regarding vehicle repairs.
15. Inspect orders for completion and quality before presentation or delivery to customers.
16. Maintain a clean and organized workspace.

Requirements

Physical Demands

Ability to frequently lift or carry parts in excess of 100 lbs. Ability to assume positions on and under vehicles while performing repairs.

Environmental / Physical Conditions

Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, noise and temperature variances.

Equipment

  • OSHA approved steel toed safety shoes required from the first day of this job.
  • Welding equipment (both MIG and stick electrode); Oxygen/Acetylene cutting and welding outfit; Drill press; Hydraulic press; Band hack saw; Floor grinder; Common air and electric power hand tools (Company and personally provided) (1/2" air wrench required). Mechanic must furnish all hand tools up to and including 3/4".
Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate)
  • Post Secondary Certificate or training in mechanics preferred
Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years experience in general heavy-duty truck and/or trailer repair.
Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid drivers’ license with clean driving record. Class A driver’s license preferred.
