General Position Summary


Under the general supervision of the CEO, the

Director of Marketing and Communications

will market hospital services by interacting with established accounts, assisting with the development of new prospects, and for promoting a positive image of the hospital to the community. Maintains account relationships, monitors patient satisfaction, and provides information on new or enhanced services. Works with management & physicians to identify marketing needs & target audiences. Position will be responsible for coordinating and administering projects, activities, policies, and procedures relating to all aspects of Public Relations, Communications, and Marketing.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities


Develop marketing plans and strategies for the hospital; formulate long range plans for marketing activities; create strategies for the introduction of new services or the expansion of existing services.

Plan, develop, coordinate and participate in various marketing research activities to identify community and patient preferences and attitudes.

Maintain liaison with representatives of the media to place articles in local, regional and national newspapers and magazines; provide photographs to the news media, ensuring positive relationships with all entities.

Coordinates design and deployment of advertisements; prepare press releases and articles; develop, write, edit and lay out hospital publications; coordinate with printers and other personnel to ensure publications are printed on schedule and according to budgetary and other requirements.

Plan and organize various hospital activities and public relations events to promote services and increase public awareness; prepare and deliver presentations to promote the goals, values and mission, and services of the hospital.

Participates as an active representative in community events and organizations as requested by the CEO.

Conducts tours of the hospital facility.

Compiles data for, and analyzes results of demographic and other marketing studies to identify trends to maximize effectiveness of marketing efforts; research targeted markets and evaluate marketing strategies.

Manage the annual marketing and advertising budgets.

Creates and distributes hospital employee newsletter on a monthly basis.

Respond to inquiries via telephone and in person, as well as corresponding via phone, email and US mail.

Holds self accountable for knowledge of and compliance with customer service and performance standards. *Customer is defined as patients, visitors, guests, volunteers, vendors, staff and physicians.

Safeguards the confidentiality of all patient information.


Secondary Functions


Work as a team player to provide quality service, whether direct or indirect.

Attends and participates in hospital meetings, including managerial and board meetings.

Participates in continuing education opportunities for professional growth and development.

Other duties as assigned/required.

Job Scope


Work generally involves reoccurring situations with occasional variations from the norm with a moderate degree of complexity. Practices and procedures are generally established, with some development of new concepts. Work is performed with little to no supervision.

Supervisory Responsibility


No direct supervisory responsibilities.

Interpersonal Contacts


Contacts are made both within and outside the hospital, including presentations to the general public. Content may occasionally be of a sensitive/confidential matter.

Specific Job Skills


Proficient with Microsoft office suite and appropriate desktop publishing and other marketing related software.

Ability to read and interpret business and professional journals.

Ability to write reports and prepare materials to be distributed.

Effective written communication skills are necessary for frequent interaction and/or correspondence with individuals in other hospital areas, processors at insurance companies, government agencies and clients.

Effective verbal communication skills are necessary for interaction with all customers, media, governmental agencies, and other outside vendors.

Ability to give formal & informal presentations, including impromptu interaction with various entities.

Ability to influence others through strong written & verbal communication.

Strong active listening skills

Ability to deal with abstract ideas, to be creative.

Organizational skills including strict attention to detail in all aspects of the planning process.

Knowledge of graphic arts layout / web design

Ability to transport/move up to ten pounds of files, books, documents at a time on a regular basis.

Education and/or Experience


Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or related field; five years related experience, preferably in healthcare or directly related field.

Job Conditions


Normal office environment during regular business hours. Work may take place during evenings, early mornings or on weekends. Work may involve exposure to hospital patients and families.
