Directs and manages all engineering design activities associated with the electric distribution system (12 kV and below) within their geographic work area. Provides guidance and direction to employees to satisfy customers by producing high quality, timely and cost-effective engineering designs and solutions to technical problems.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a team of bargaining unit electric distribution design personnel including setting objectives, performance management and preparation of annual reviews.
  • Develop a safe, effective and self-motivated work group through the selection, training, coaching and annual review processes. Identify and provide training for design personnel in existing systems and new technologies.
  • Manage and lead storm restoration efforts in area/regional storm room. Responsible for establishing training and periodic storm drills for design and support staff.
  • Direct, evaluate and authorize design work to meet Company engineering and construction specifications, the NESC and OSHA standards. Manage engineering processes and quality to provide electric service to residential, commercial, industrial and municipal customers in a timely and cost-effective manner in accordance with PUC tariffs and PPL Standard Practice Instructions.
  • Manage engineering processes and quality to provide timely and cost-effective designs for reliability and maintenance related projects.
  • Drive customer satisfaction initiatives within area and create positive working relationships with all other regional and central office groups, working together to satisfy internal and external customers.
  • Evaluates and authorizes design work completed by engineering contractors and serves as a key interface with a variety of work groups.
  • Resolve engineering and scheduling related issues by interfacing with customers, contractors, consulting engineers and foreign utilities. Provide support to and work with the management team and internal partners to resolve technical and process related issues.
  • Responsible for providing a timely response to PUC complaints related to Distribution Operations.
  • Lead investigations related to power system incidents and non-employee contacts. May serve as an expert witness when questions of the operation of the electric distribution system results in legal action.
  • Manage capital and O&M budgets to meet financial mandates and assist in the creation of these budgets.


  • Candidate Qualifications

    Candidates must meet the basic qualifications to receive consideration.

    Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited by ABET, or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent. Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.
  • 3 years experience in distribution/engineering/technical related functions.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in establishing strong working relationships with bargaining unit and management personnel.
  • A valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.


  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited by ABET, or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent. Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.
  • Knowledge of Company policies, procedures and safety rules.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering theory, along with knowledge of the National Electric Code and National Electric Safety Code.
