The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) is looking for bright, motivated, and dedicated English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers who are prepared to be inspiring leaders in their classroom and raise achievement for every student. Collectively, our students speak more than 160 languages, and proficiency in English will be crucial for non-native speakers as they prepare for college and, eventually, career work. This position is your chance to open doors for one of the most diverse student populations in the country, and help our more than 150,000 English Language Learner (ELL) students prepare for their futures.
To help address the challenges of ESL education, we offer our teachers a variety of support tools meant to foster successful English-language instruction in the classroom. For example, we’ve developed a number of pilot programs, such as Imagine Learning English! and the EMC Masterpiece Series, to identify and test new methods to help our students grow as English speakers. We’ve also partnered with Stanford University’s “Understanding Language” program to help further cultivate our own ELL study units, and our teachers often work closely with the New York State Education Department’s Intensive Teacher Institute in Bilingual Education and ESL to develop their teaching proficiency.

Compensation and Benefits
We understand how vital an outstanding teacher is to the success of every child, which is why we offer starting salaries ranging from $45,530 to $74,796 based on prior teaching experience as well as their undergraduate and graduate education.
As a New York City teacher, you may be eligible for a wide array of incentives and school positions that will stretch and challenge you as an educator as well as offer additional compensation. Some of these have been funded by a recent $53 million Teacher Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which supports the continued development of our teaching force based on the unique needs and interests of each teacher within.
