JOB SUMMARY:

The Sr. Military Family Life Counselor (MFLC) is a licensed mental health professional who exercises discretion and independent judgment to provide appropriate information, coaching, training, and education to military families and service members.

The Sr. Counselor provides face to face direct, non-medical, brief, solution-focused counseling services to individuals, couples, families and groups for situations resulting from commonly occurring life circumstances such as parenting, relationship conflicts, stress, personal loss, and deployments and reunions.

The Sr. Counselor coordinates commander preferences and priorities for resource deployment on the installation and in local military schools. The Sr. Counselor arranges for installation access for a team of local MFLCs and provides mentoring and general guidance to MFLCs on compliance with installation military protocol.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Partners with and augments activities of Service Family Centers, Guard and Reserve programs (including Inter-Service Family Assistance Committees), unit family support staff officers, and other programs and services to build coalitions and connect Federal, state, and local resources and non-profit organizations to support Active Duty, Guard and Reserve families.
  • Identifies family needs.
  • Provides face to face non-medical problem solving counseling to families when other resources are not available and makes appropriate referrals and warm transfers to military and community resources according to the needs of families and service members, including the following activities:
  • Consults with and trains military commands and service providers as requested.
  • Develops and/or uses approved training and education programs and materials.
  • Provides client tracking of services performed and referrals made using appropriate reporting system.
  • May assist with interviewing applicant SPA MFLCs.
  • Advises on curriculum development and processes requests from commanders on new presentations, advising on compliance with scope of non-medical counseling practice and contract requirements.
  • Briefs senior members of the military command on behalf of a team of local MFLCs and serves as the single point of contact for disseminating and communicating commander priorities.
  • Arranges for base access for a team of MFLCs and addresses transition issues occurring among MFLCs who rotate on assignments, advising on the current status of installation military protocol.
  • Acts in a highly visible role within a brigade, representing the program within a team of high level military leaders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
                      Qualifications

                          REQUIREMENTS:

                          Education:

                          Master's Degree in clinically relevant field from accredited university required

                          Certification/License:

                          Possess and maintain a full license to practice independently at the Master's or Doctorate level as a Clinical Social Worker, Marriage Family Therapist or Psychologist without restrictions or supervision (i.e. LCSW, LISW, MFT, LPC, etc.) Some assignments may require a full license to practice independently in the state where the assignment is located.

                          Experience:
                          • Two years post-license experience working with families in the areas of relationships, behavior management, coping skills, parenting skills/education, child development, separation, stress management, single parenting, step-parenting, family separation, reunion and reintegration, assessments and referrals required
                          • At least 18 months working with the MFLC program as an embedded/SOCOM/Lead MFLC preferred
                          • Ability to pass and maintain a SECRET Clearance as required for SOCOM assignments
                          • A direct association with the military is preferred but not required
                          Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
                          • Working knowledge of military lifestyle and issues that impact families
                          • Ability to develop and present effective group presentations
                          • Ability to accurately assess needs and make referrals to appropriate resources
                          • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships using tact and diplomacy in interactions with individuals/families and with program representatives and officials
                          • Computer skills sufficient to create, maintain, and send reports
                          • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
                          • Proven ability to work as a self-starter, demonstrating flexibility, leadership and poise
                          • Ability to work with minimal supervision and oversight and use independent judgment
                          • Travel between work sites may be required

                          • Phone usage may be required up to 15 percent of the time; headsets may be required.
                          • May be required to maintain established work pace, meet deadlines; may have last minute urgent requests.
                          • May be required to travel 25 percent of the time.
                          • May be required to lift, carry and/or move equipment/supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
                          • May operate personal computers, printers, facsimile, telephones, copy machines and other commonly used office accessories/equipment.
                          • Frequent interruptions/distractions; environment may be loud.
                          • Physical activity may include: twisting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, grasping, grabbing, pushing, pulling, repetitive motion, climbing, etc.
                          • Significant reading required via internet and/or bound regulatory volumes.
                          • Work may be sedentary, desk bound or seated up to 8 hours per day.
                          • May be required to walk or stand up to 4 hour per day; walking and/or transporting supplies and equipment between buildings/parking lots and structures may be required
