Garden State Equality is hiring a senior staff member and at least one mid-level or junior staffer to lead the organization’s work across New Jersey to counter the bullying of students in schools and school-related settings. Garden State Equality has developed a pathbreaking anti-bullying program based on the state’s anti-bullying law that the organization wrote with legislators – the strongest such law in America. Though Garden State Equality is an LGBT civil rights organization, our anti-bullying advocacy is on behalf of all vulnerable students, LGBT and non-LGBT students alike. These positions provide an extraordinary opportunity to improve young people’s lives. An ideal candidate would have a background in two different areas: (1) Experience working with students, whether in education, social work or other youth advocacy settings; and (2) solid field organizing experience, as the positions will primarily involve mobilizing youth, their families and our other members to take grassroots action to counter bullying.
Of the two criteria, the field organizing experience – on behalf of an issue or candidate in a campaign covering a meaningful geographic area – means more to us. We greatly respect, but would not hire for these positions, youth advocates whose experience is solely academic, theoretical or therapeutic, but with little or no experience as self-starting field organizers across a district, region or state. The positions may involve evening or weekend work to mobilize students and other educational stakeholders outside the school day, including through Garden State Equality’s Youth Caucus that meets on certain weeknights throughout the year. The title and salary for each position is commensurate with experience. To apply, please email your resume and an optional cover letter to Employment (at) GardenStateEquality.org and put Anti-Bullying Staff in the subject line. The senior position is based at Garden State Equality’s headquarters in Montclair, one of America’s most progressive and vibrant metropolitan enclaves, just outside of Manhattan. The mid-level position(s) may be based elsewhere in New Jersey.
The nondiscrimination policy of Garden State Equality is to go beyond the requirements of both federal law and New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination, the oldest and strongest state civil rights statute in the United States. In every facet of its organizational operations, including employment, grassroots outreach, and Board and general membership, Garden State Equality does not discriminate, and has zero tolerance for any discrimination, on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, gender, age, race, color, religion, no religion, ethnicity, heritage, native language, veteran status, economic status, HIV or AIDS status, partner or marital status, height and weight characteristics, or being differently abled. Going beyond nondiscrimination, Garden State Equality aggressively strives for diversity in these and any other qualities that make our society a rich mosaic.
