Performs skilled work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection; routine, non-routine and contract maintenance inspection; and highly -skilled roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. . MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience
Three (3) years experience in engineering support, maintenance, construction, light and heavy equipment operation, transportation-related and roadway maintenance work. (Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.)

Considerable knowledge of
Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures

Proficient skill in
Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups
Coordinating labor, materials and equipment
The use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
The use of light and heavy highway equipment
Maintaining a safe working relationship

Performs a combination of the following:
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly-skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic; as required moves items related to these activities.
Drives to move/pick up litter and roadway debris to assure a safe thoroughfare; maintains picnic and rest areas and maintenance yards.
Serves as a lead worker and assists in training others.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Must have a Commercial Driver License at time of application.
Required to work weekends and holidays.
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
Driver 's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.

External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.

Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.

If hired, employee must provide document(s) within three(3) days of hire date that establish identity and employment eligibility. A complete list of acceptable documents is on file with the local Texas Workforce Commission office.

Department employees or family members will not have, either directly or indirectly, any financial or other personal interest in a department (or a TxDOT) contract or subcontract of any kind. A contract may not be awarded to an entity that is owned in whole or in part by any TxDOT employee or immediate family member.

As part of its employment process, TxDOT may procure or have prepared a criminal background check. An applicant with an unsatisfactory criminal background check report is ineligible to be hired for the position for which the report is initiated.
