Job Summary:
This programmer will develop and refine the core digital game environments at the heart of the EGAME grant under the direction of Principal Investigator. The programmer will also coordinate and manage parallel programming efforts at UC Berkeley, Filament Games, and InquireLearning. Each of these institutions collaborates on the EGAME grant, but Vanderbilt is the lead institution and the lead developer and designer.

Under general supervision of the principal investigators, the programmer will design, test, and implement custom digital games using complex software code/programming languages; coordinate and collaborate in production across multiple sites, teams, and collaborating institutions; work as part of a collaborative design team; perform system analysis and program development on assigned projects using independent judgment. Integrate web applications and digital games with backend databases.

The EGAME project at Vanderbilt researches and develops games to help middle school students learn science. The project and this position are funded by a National Science Foundation grant. More information about the project is available at:

Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Substantial expertise and experience with complex Flash application development using ActionScript 3 to develop complex digital environments and games.

Expertise with CSS/JavaScript in modern browser environments

Expertise with MySQL

Preferred Education, Skills, and Experiences:
Substantial experience coding and playing digital games.

Artistic ability

Expertise with graphics and design software

Expertise in other scripting languages (Perl, Python, Ruby, etc)

Competence with Linux / Apache / Tomcat

Additional Information:
This is a full-time, exempt position (40 hours per week). This is a grant funded position.

This position is typically Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; however, the candidate selected for this position may have to travel to conferences to ensure proper set-up and functionality of the system(s) as dictated by business needs.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
