The El Paso VA Health Care System in El Paso, Texas is recruiting for a full-time Supervisory Physician-Psychiatrist. The El Paso VAHCS is part of VISN 18 Network, and is a standalone ambulatory care facility with over 600 employees and growing. We are an out-patient clinic with working hours from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm, Mondays through Fridays.

U.S. Citizenship

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

Must pass pre-employment examination.

Duties include a combination of key administrative, clinical, and training functions within the Mental Health Service.

Serves as Clinical Program Director supervising day-to-day clinical operations and providing supervision to key clinical staff including prescribers and nursing staff; participates in key committees and projects, both at the Service and the facility levels.

Performs psychiatric evaluations, psychiatric medication management, and coordination of overall mental health care to a panel of Veterans; may provide psychotherapy, consistent with interests and clinical needs of Veterans.

Provides oversight to the Texas Tech University- Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program affiliation at the El Paso VAHCS, including direct supervision of residents, coordination of residency training at the VA, and serving as primary liaison with Texas Tech Psychiatry Program (Texas Tech faculty status is available). Provides leadership and works closely with mental health and facility colleagues to innovate comprehensive, state-of-art outpatient mental health care, including evidenced-based practice and other essential components of the VA Uniform Services Mental Health Handbook.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.


Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.


Must be board certified or eligible.

Preferred Experience

1. Background in leadership and/or administrative roles.

2. Board certification in Psychiatry.

3. Experience with academic medical practice and supervision of trainees.

The work is primarily sedentary where the employee may sit comfortably but sometimes for extended periods, i.e., while attending meetings. There is some walking, standing, carrying of items, i.e., medical records and manuals. In general, the work does not require special physical demands. Travel by car and/or air may be required as a part of outreach events and/or training.
