The Division of Juvenile Justice is recruiting to fill a Juvenile Justice Officer I (JJO I) position at the Mat-Su Youth Facility (MSYF)
Juvenile Justice Officers (JJO's) are the primary staff in providing care, custody, and supervision for Alaska juveniles detained and institutionalized in group-living situations within a correctional facility. JJO's are responsible for maintaining adequate security within this correctional facility and addressing behavioral problems as needed.
The MSYF JJO positions provide care in a safe environment for detained at-risk youth who are awaiting court actions, diagnostic evaluation, and placement in a long or short-term treatment facility; or who may be too difficult to deal with in other placements due to behavioral issues or unwillingness to remain in less restrictive placements.
The successful candidate will possess many of the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

- Experience supervising and instructing juveniles or young adults is preferred.
- Ability to work with juveniles that have serious mental health issues.
- Ability and desire to work with aggressive/angry juvenile offenders.
- Willingness to work in a locked environment with juveniles that have committed criminal offenses.
- Ability to build positive relationships with adolescents from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to write objective reports.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of the principles of restorative justice.
*This is a flexibly staffed position in the Juvenile Justice Officer (JJO) I/II series. The JJO I position is an entry-level position, earning $3,119.00/month. Incumbents are eligible to flex up to a JJO II after 6 months, by completing designated training and becoming proficient at the job duties of a JJO II, earning $3,519.00/month.*
Six months of experience as a Juvenile Justice Officer I with the State of Alaska and demonstrated achievement of department approved performance standards.
One year of experience supervising juvenile or adult offenders remanded to the custody of a correctional facility.
One year of experience administering, supervising, advising on or performing professional level probation, parole, social casework or residential treatment casework.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in counseling, education, psychology, corrections, criminal justice, the behavioral sciences, or a closely related field.
Prior to appointment successful candidates for Juvenile Justice Officer II positions are subject to a criminal record check, background investigation, and a medical examination to determine that the essential duties of the position can be safely performed.
Juvenile Justice Officers II are required to be on call and must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Occasional travel may be required.
A valid Alaska driver license is required at the time of appointment.

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the I or II level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level I, promotion to the Level II will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class and final approval by supervisor.
