The successful applicant will initiate and sustain internationally competitive research in applying machine learning and data mining to evidence-based medicine, providing intellectual input and research ideas leading to grant proposals and future funded projects related to evidence synthesis. Specifically, the incumbent will continue the development of software developed by the Tufts Evidence-based practice center; will identify solutions to machine learning and information retrieval challenges; and partake in the write-up of proposals and scientific manuscripts. Additionally, the incumbent assists investigators with preparation of reports to funding agencies and fielding responses to requests for customer support.
This posting is for a short-term employment (through October 2012), with longer term prospects contingent on the successful renewal of associated grants and contracts from Tufts Medical Center researchers. The salary is competitive.
The incumbent works closely with the project investigators in system design, construction, analysis, and testing. Provides support and technical programming expertise to resolve complex issues related to the task order.
Responsible for furthering the development of, and assisting with the maintenance (i.e., fixing bugs) in, the programs currently maintained by the Tufts EPC, including: OpenMetaAnalyst, a cross-platform desktop application for performing statistical meta-analysis, written in Python (with PyQT for the GUI) and R (http://tuftscaes.org/open_meta/); abstrackr, a web-tool to facilitate collaborative citation screening for systematic reviews written in Python atop the Pylons web framework (http://tuftscaes.org/citation_screening/); and COPDDB, a web application for exploring meta-analyses investigating the correlation between SNPs and COPD – also written in Python and R, atop Pylons (http://caes.webfactional.com/copddb/copd).
Responsible for leading the design (both from a software and User Interface perspective) of new programs to be developed at the EPC.

It is important that the programmer/computer scientist have strong mathematical, statistical, and subject matter knowledge to work effectively with the investigators; and proven excellent writing and communication skills.
Statistical and data mining knowledge and prior experience in coding meta-analysis and statistical programs are necessary. Previous experience in a biomedical research environment is very desirable.
Work experience with modern Object-Oriented paradigms and programming languages such as Java, Microsoft VB, C#, Python and their work environments. Experience with the .NET platform is of particular importance. Additional knowledge of mathematical and statistical programming languages (R, Matlab) preferred.
