Commercial Lines Underwriting Supervisor

Contribute to company profit objectives by making decisions regarding the acceptability of risks we write through establishing controls and guidelines along with frequent detailed analysis of the branch's book of business.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Provide assistance to underwriters on new and renewal business by reviewing files to confirm acceptance with established company underwriting guidelines. May include evaluating loss history, MVR’s, financial statements, loss control surveys and correspondence.
Review referral accounts for acceptability prior to them being submitted to the Home Office.
Notifies the Company of any changes in market conditions that may impact territory strategy.
Assist employee development by recognizing needs and providing or supporting appropriate training.
Performance review and the establishment of goals for Commercial Lines Underwriters.
Perform periodic file reviews.
Maintain good working relations with Branch Manager, associates, agents and public.
Travel within the branches underwriting territory as needed.
Assist in the budgeting and planning process and making sure those plans are carried out and goals achieved.
Provide backup when underwriters are absent and possibly maintain a reduced underwriting territory.
Monitor the branches book of business for possible catastrophic exposures.
Manage workflow in a way that will insure the company service standards are met and premiums booked in a timely fashion.

Other additional elements of performance will impact this position and will be provided by the supervisor of this position.
Required Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in insurance or related field and ten (10) years minimum commercial lines underwriting experience or equivalent industry experience. Some supervisory experience preferred. Professional designations preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect an evaluate data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, agents, and vendors.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, circumference, and volume.
Ability to project a warm and friendly manner in all business contacts and maintain a professional relationship with fellow workers, agency contacts, and the general public.
Ability to utilize PC software and proprietary company systems.
Functions generally performed in an office environment. Must be able to work as a team member to solve problems and exchange information. Extensive daily contact with underwriters, marketing personnel and agents/brokers.
Sedentary position which involves sitting and keyboarding, talking and hearing, some waling, lifting (10 lbs. or less), carrying, kneeling and bending. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
