KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
California credential authorizing service as a Speech and Hearing Specialist or in communicative disorders.
Knowledge of language developmental milestones, assessment, oral motor development, and early intervention services specific to infant/toddlers, birth to age 3. Participate as a multidisciplinary team member. Collaborate with other professionals and parents regarding strategies for communication-based intervention for special needs children ages birth to 3. Provide individualized and group trainings to parents, teachers, and other staff members in the area of communication development. Understand and implement Early Start Regulations and the IFSP process. Design individualized home programs to increase parent awareness and knowledge in the area of communication development, community resources, and support. Familiarity with types of hearing loss, audiologic assessment, and causes/consequences of hearing loss on speech-language development. Structure intervention activities that are developmentally appropriate and suited to increase emerging communication behaviors in young children. Knowledge of basic sign language, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), and high/low tech communication systems. Participate in planning and implementation of Parent Involvement Activities (PIAs) that provide opportunities for families to interact with each other. Supervise speech para-educator activities and duties. Case-management.
