To better support AARP’s priorities and mobilize volunteers and members in the states, State Operations includes multiple teams in the National Office collaborating across all AARP entities and geographic boundaries in addition to the five regions and 53 State Offices.

Summary Statement

Works to develop LCE’s presence in the DC community through strengthening visibility, media presence, management of online community, volunteer capacity, building community partnerships, and delivering LCE programs and outreach activities. Works to build and maintain relationships with media outlets in the DC region and to promote LCE’s programs and outreach efforts through media and public relations activities. Also, develops and implements an online and web-based communications strategy to supplement traditional media and public relations activities.


  • Develops and implements a public relations strategy for LCE. Performs communications functions, including basic promotion of LCE, news releases, and media advisories. Coordinates and provides assistance in responding to the media on LCE programs and activities. May serve as media spokesperson, article writer, or technical expert to enhance media awareness of LCE in the DC area.
  • Develops and implements online and web-based communications strategy for LCE which includes contributing written and other content for website, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms.
  • Serves as editor responsible for quality control of all printed and online material content that is distributed by LCE. Will develop and coordinate a consistent message across all communication platforms.
  • Works with internal LCE staff to coordinate and publicize all LCE Outreach activities in the DC community.
  • Will assist LCE Development Director with any activities related to communications and events involving funders and donors as required.

  • Requirements

    Completion of Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related discipline and 4-6 years of experience. Demonstrates a strong understanding of media relations, communications, public relations, online communications and/or social media. Excellent written and oral communication skills across traditional platforms such as print, radio, and television, as well as an understanding and appreciation for online experience. Strong planning and project management skills. Detail-oriented.
