Provide clerical support to the Administrative Nurse of the designated unit. Transcribe Doctor’s orders; verify, record, post and file information materials via manual and/or automated systems; evaluate and report data pertinent to the functioning of the patient care unit; interpret and apply medical terminology; coordinate intra-departmental communications; foster public relations; participate in meetings and continuing education.
Recent ward clerk and/or appropriate clerical experience in an acute hospital environment. Skill in transcribing doctor’s orders and medical information via manual or automated systems accurately, neatly and legibly. Skill in evaluating and reporting various kinds of emergent information pertinent to the functioning of an inpatient care unit. Ability to communicate on a one-to-one basis the duties of a ward secretary to float personnel and other staff members. Skill in responding to inquiries, imparting information and interpreting hospital policies and procedures to patients, public and staff in prompt and courteous manner, maintaining a professional manner. Ability to speak grammatically correct English clearly and distinctly to obtain and convey information to the public and hospital staff. Ability to read and write English to understand, interpret and record all ward clerk duties. Ability to perform with frequent interruption and distractions. Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner when there are competing requirements and a heavy workload. Ability to pass an 8 hour computer data entry training course.
