Serves in a communication consulting role on Companywide initiatives to determine the right vehicle to effectively deliver the appropriate message to the right audience at the right time.

Serves as strategic communication advisor to the highest level of department Leadership and works with all levels of Employees as necessary.

Responsible for developing message channel strategy for initiatives that have a significant impact on the SWA operation.

Resposible for department specific contingency planning, crisis response, and issue management.

Responsible for ensuring department Leaders have applicable communication training and support.

Responsible for creating and driving platforms for department Leadership; working to create an Internal and External presence for our Executives.

Serves as liaison between Communications Department and Operating Department to ensure that consistent and streamlines for the Company.

Active member of Communication Leadership Team; must demonstrate autonomy by leading communication strategy, gathering content from multiple sources, obtaining and coordinating the proper approvals, and writing appropriately timed content to be delivered on an extensive scale and platform.

Communicate on a broad, public platform with significant influence and reach. Potentially serves as company voice for Employees, media outlets, and social audiences.

Must be able to meet any physical ability requirements listed on this description.

May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders.

Minimum Requirements BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.


College degree (preferably in the Communication or Journalism field) or 5+ years of work experience in related field required.


6-9 years in public information, communication, journalism and/or advertising/marketing including solid experience in strategic communication required.

3+ years of executive level counsel and/or media training.

Demonstrates comfort and confidence with public speaking, acting as a media spokesperson, and presenting in front of senior level leaders.
Agency experience a plus.

Seasoned communicator:

Strong writing/editing skills.

Presence in social media.

Ability to digest comprehensive and sensitive issues and condense them into communications tools for public consumption.

Recognize qualities that make an event media worthy as well as industry issues that will create attention, both positively and negatively.

Must have an appropriate filter for varying audiences.

Must be able to present complex information and solid direction to project teams and/or Executive staff.

Can develop and articulate an effective project plan.

Experience planning integrated product campaigns.

Working knowledge of social media.

Media relations experience:

Strong media contacts or experience building strong media contacts.

Can demonstrate confidence and credibility in working with credentialed media.

Confident spokesperson.

Available after-hours for on-call on a rotating basis.

Sense of urgency; deadline sensitive; knows how to draw the right people in for providing awareness and accurate responses.

Should know how to use multiple mediums to monitor and report news trends.

Must have reasoning and judgment skills sufficient to handle complex and controversial media inquiries of all types.


Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines.

Must be technically proficient with Microsoft Office products,especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Must have exceptional organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Must have ability to type and/or use a computer keyboard with sufficient speed to meet demands of job.

Must be extremely detail-oriented with superb ability to proofread and correct errors with minimal supervision.

Must possess clear, concise, writing skills.

Must have ability to speak confidently in front of large and small groups.

Must have ability to produce multiple page documents, charts, graphs, and reports.

Must be able to provide counsel to Executives and execute projects autonomously.

Must be able to handle multiple situations simultaneously with strong attention to detail.

Must be a motivated, self-starter able to prioritize and organize projects with time constraints and the ability to complete them in a timely manner.

Must keep abreast of information pertinent to job.

Maintains thorough knowledge in specialized area consistent with Southwest Airlines objectives.

Works well with Internal and External Customers to achieve the goals of Southwest Airlines.

Actively participates in meetings and departmental functions as necessary to ensure successful results for the department.

Provides support to Senior Leaders on Special Projects as assigned.

Must demonstrate a strategic thought process; proactive initiative and a sense of urgency.

Must take ownership and accountability.

Must be available to travel as needed.

Must meet confidentiality expectations pertaining to confidential, proprietary and sensitive Company information.
