Essential Job Functions:
• Investigates reports of abuse, neglect or exploitation of elderly or disabled adults to assess the urgency of the problem by interviewing clients, family members and other to gather social, functional, physical and mental-emotional information for evaluation.
• Provides services after normal working hours and on weekends to maintain 24 hour coverage, including receiving reports of alleged abuse, neglect or exploitation.
• Determines temporary or long-term action to be taken to remove or lessen an immediate threat to the life or health of an adult protective services client to include counseling clients and caregivers, providing information and referral services, testifying in court to seek emergency protective services, finding alternate housing when necessary, and providing on-going services.
• Develops individualized service plans to meet the needs of the adult protective services client and maintains detailed documentation on each case.
• Makes presentations and participates in community awareness and related activities to inform the public about the program.
• Prepares routine, statistical, and special reports for management.
• Serves in lead capacity in absence of supervisor.
• Performs other duties as assigned and required to maintain unit operations.
• Promotes and demonstrates appropriate respect for cultural diversity among coworkers and all work-related contacts.
• Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave policy.

• Ability to be on call in order to receive reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
• Ability to work with violent and dangerous individuals.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Applicants for positions which require, as part of the essential functions of the job, driving a motor vehicle, must have a reliable motor vehicle, and acceptable driving record for the past five years, and a current, valid Texas drivers license appropriate for the vehicle and passenger or cargo load. Applicants must provide proof of driving record and license.
Initial Selection Criteria:
•Adult Protective Services Specialist I: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university OR currently employed as an Adult Protective Services Specialist I OR previous experience as an Adult Protective Services Specialist I in Department of Family and Protective Services.
•Adult Protective Services Specialist II: Employed as an Adult Protective Services Specialist for one year AND have received Adult Protective Services Specialist Certification OR currently employed as an Adult Protective Services Specialist II OR previous experience as an Adult Protective Services Specialist II in Department of Family and Protective Services.
•Adult Protective Services Specialist III: Two years cumulative Adult Protective Services Specialist experience AND currently employed as an Adult Protective Services Specialist II AND have received Adult Protective Services Advanced Specialist certification OR currently employed as an Adult Protective Services Specialist III OR previous experience as an Adult Protective Services Specialist III in Department of Family and Protective Services.
•Adult Protective Services Specialist IV: Four years cumulative Adult Protective Services Specialist experience AND currently employed as an Adult Protective Services Specialist III AND have an active Adult Protective Services Advanced Specialist Certification OR currently employed as an Adult Protective Services Specialist IV OR previous experience as an Adult Protective Services Specialist IV in Department of Family and Protective Services.
This position may be filled at any level from an APS Specialist I to APS Specialist IV. The starting salary range is $2,494.41 to $2,970.91 per month and will be based on the qualifications of the selected applicant. Factors such as education and experience may be considered when establishing the starting salary. The starting salary for former agency employees and employees transferring directly from other Texas state agencies may exceed the range above; however, the starting salary for this position may not exceed $4,604.83 if filled at the highest classification.
Applicants for this position who are screened and selected for further consideration are required to complete an on-line assessment as part of the hiring process. Applicants must pass the on-line assessment to be eligible to progress through the process and may receive an interview. If the applicant fails/does not pass, the applicant will not be selected for an interview. The applicant must wait six (6) months to re-take the assessment test. The applicant will receive an e-mail providing instructions on how to proceed. The subject of the email is “State of Texas DFPS Pre-Employment Test”. It is confidential and takes approximately two (2) hours to complete. The user will receive a password, known as a “token”, that will allow him/her to
complete the assessment during multiple sessions. Please note the password will expire after five (5) days and candidates with incomplete assessments will not be able to move forward in the process.
