The Assistant Service Manager manages operations and administrative functions including P&D, Line Haul, Warehouse, Billing and Customer Service by performing certain personal duties or having them performed through subordinate supervisors.

JOB CONTENT - · Manages the Line Haul function, making certain that schedules are met, that all loads are moved in a time fashion and that enough drivers are employed. · Manages the P&D function. Understands and is able to teach others the P&D costing system. Reacts to deviations in the costing system and causes correction/improvement. · Investigates shipper or consignee complaints regarding lost or damaged freight or shortages in shipment to determine responsibility. · Directs preparation of claims against carrier responsible and corresponds with shipper or consignee to effect settlement. · Schedules shipments to ensure compliance with interstate traffic laws and regulations and company policies. · Manages the Warehouse operations, both inbound and outbound. Understands the warehouse efficiency system and is able to train new associates to use this system. · Manages the Customer Service Department, making certain that the customer needs are met both in OS&D and Tracing. · Manages the billing department, ensuring that the system operates efficiently and effectively. · Manages all clerical functions attendant to billing such as gas receipt systems, rates supplied at customer request, etc. · Is involved in the Sales operation and the Maintenance operation. · Manages many subordinate supervisors. Is responsible fore the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the units that are supervised by these subordinates. Also directly supervises many non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. · Other duties as assigned by management . MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - · Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university required. · One to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. · Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. · Ability to respond to common inquiries or complains from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. · Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. · Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors. · Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. · Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. · Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. · Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. · Valid driver’s license and understanding of DOT Regulations
