Pre-analytical processing of medical specimens. Preparation of specimens for testing through the following: sorting, coding, inputting, labeling, swapping, receiving, CVISing, manifesting, and filing. The position includes several additional duties, such as specimen retrieval, SHMC send-outs, network account check-in, etc. Accurate performance of these duties is vital to the beginning step in the laboratory process and must be maintained at all times.Professionally represent PAML and Affiliates to the community by providing high quality courier services for all clients.

Individual is responsible for pick-up and delivery of specimens, reports and supplies for client locations according to department/company procedures. Individual is also responsible to keep courier vehicles clean, perform basic maintenance checks and report any irregularities to the immediate supervisor. Individual is also responsible to accurately account for all items picked-up and delivered using manual (paper) or electronic data collection devices.

Coordinates with:

Analysis Center, Resolution Center, Referral Testing, Client Services, Courier Services, Billing, Information Services, Clinical Input, Patient Service Centers and Network accounts

Work Conditions:

• Work is performed in a medical or clinical office setting or nursing home environment.
• Moderate physical activity. May require physical effort including repetitively lifting up to 75 pounds
• Some extended periods of standing or walking
• Exposure to weather extremes
• Potential risk job due to time spent driving in traffic
• Potential contamination from handling of specimens
• Potential exposure to contaminated biological specimens
• No smoking environment
• Must follow company dress code
• Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases and therefore require the use of personal protective equipment. Exposure to odorous chemicals and specimens.
• Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Work independently, sometimes alone. Travel may be required.
• Able to handle stressful situations in regards to weather conditions, traffic and on-demand customer pick-up requests

Essential Job Functions:

• Distribution of specimens, supplies, or correspondence to various departments, physicians and hospitals. Handle Medical Specimens according to policy.
• Ability to use company supplied technology including but not limited to; two-way radios, in field scanning equipment, mobile handheld devices, mobile printers and Pocket PC type devices.
• Safely Operate a motor vehicle in Urban, Suburban and Rural environments.
• Able to change a flat tire and perform basic vehicle maintenance checks

6. Adherence to department policies and procedures

Requirements

1. High School Diploma or equivalent
2. Ability to learn basic medical terminology
3. Accurate and efficient typing skills (35 WPM minimum)
4. Ability to work with accuracy and speed in a team oriented effort while paying close attention to detail
1. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
2. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases and therefore require the use of “personal protective equipment”.
3. Exposure to specimens, odorous chemicals, toxic chemical agents, (high use of bleach & dry ice)
4. Potential contamination from handling of specimens
5. Potential exposure to contaminated biological specimens
6. May not eat or drink in laboratory areas due to the possible presence of blood-borne pathogens
