AIG Life & Retirement is seeking an Accountant III for its financial reporting group in our Houston, TX office. The right individual will be involved in preparing, reviewing and analyzing monthly and quarterly financial statements for AIG Life and Retirement Companies (“AIG L&R”) or Lines of Business on a GAAP or statutory basis of accounting, over a period of years through potential job rotation. This data includes reporting by legal entity, function and line of business as well as regulatory filings, SEC financial statement filings and management reporting. This person must have advanced Excel skills and be able to maintain and modify complex spreadsheets used for reconciliation, analysis and reporting.

Moreover, the position must be able to communicate, sometimes technical data, succinctly and accurately across various staffing levels.
Organization Structure and Interfaces:
This position reports to the Manager / Director of financial reporting. This position works closely with Actuarial, Financial Reporting, Investment Accounting, Internal Audit and external auditors. In addition, this person will work with business contacts across the organization to ensure revenues, expenses are correctly reported in accordance with company and industry standards.
Use SAP general ledger, SAP BI and BPC, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint to generate monthly financial reports, journal entries, trend reports and analysis. Research to understand trends and variances, communicate with appropriate staff, actuarial associates and senior leadership to resolve issues and escalate issues when appropriate.
Develop reports using SAP BI and BPC to facilitate timely trend analysis for line of business and period over period reporting.
Meet all reporting deadline due dates and requirements set by regulators, AIG Controllers group, AIG L&R financial management, external auditors and other AIG L&R business leaders with complete accuracy. Reports include monthly and quarterly internal financial reporting packages, submissions to AIG for quarterly requirements, support AIG external reporting in public filings for AIG L&R applicable sections and regular quarterly and annual filings with regulators. Reports should include valid and complete financial data, supported by appropriate documentation and agreement to the ledger systems as applicable. Respond to ad hoc reporting requests as needed.
Identify process improvement opportunities to automate and streamline work-flow, increase efficiency and transparency and strengthen controls to ensure the accuracy of data, developing greater opportunities to provide management with actionable analytics.
Possess an understanding of GAAP and statutory accounting principles, to be able to provide critical analysis of results and variances. Learn about market, industry and economic factors that drive the business and financial results. Develop relationships with members of other departments to facilitate resolution of issues and stay informed of potential future issues.
B.A. / B.S. in Accounting is required. Public accounting and/or a CPA is preferred.
4 or more years accounting and analysis experience required within the Insurance industry.
Ability to analyze data and research accounting and financial issues.
Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills are essential.
Ability to work effectively in person, on the phone and via email with other departments to resolve complex issues.
Work effectively with minimal supervision.
Technical expertise must include strong knowledge of Excel, accounting and general ledger systems.
Proficient in the use of MS Office: Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint.
Experience working in a mid-to-large, complex company environment is most helpful.
