The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer will have primary responsibility to develop and implement new and improved methods of manufacture of stator bars in the GE large generator manufacturing facility located in Schenectady, NY. You will utilize knowledge of engineering, automation, machine design, materials and processing, fabrication processes, tooling design and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and state of the art measurement equipment. In this role, you will:

Essential Responsibilities
  • Act as advance manufacturing engineering expert for Stator Bar Manufacturing Operations, Schenectady NY and become familiar with existing processes, designs, documentation, and procedures
  • Collect data on and statistically characterize process capability
  • Identify and execute projects to improve existing process quality and lower cost
  • Provide technical leadership for and execute a plan to drive step change advancements in stator bar manufacturing processes
  • Work with suppliers to develop custom equipment to automate the rapid and repeatable forming of bar end shapes for stranded copper stator bars; develop measurement systems for same
  • Develop manufacturing processes for application of advanced bar insulation systems working closely with a cross functional and broad based team consisting of generator engineering, materials engineering, GE research and development, and engineers and operators from Generator Manufacturing operations
  • Investigate new technology for stator bar manufacture and recommend applicable new technology to business leaders
  • Participate in concurrent engineering and design of new products supporting all NPI tollgates
  • Establish, document, and maintain design for manufacturing (DFM) guidelines for engineering use compatible with current manufacturing capability
  • Evaluate new products for manufacturability per established DFM guidelines
  • Develop mockups and prototypes to validate NPI designs and test designs with shop floor to prove out
  • Ensure production workstations are adequate and optimized for New Product Platforms being developed
  • Initiate and project manage capital equipment projects that support new product designs, factory capacity additions, and quality improvement goals (typical project scope involves the development of specifications, supplier management, purchase, installation and qualification of the manufacturing equipment)
  • Provide technical support to sourcing as needed
  • Provide documentation and training to shop floor to ensure seamless new product execution
  • Develop and document a process for exchange and use of information between engineering and the shop including formats and control
  • Develop manufacturing methods, schedules, and documentation
  • Implement operator training plans
  • Apply lean methods to equipment and material handling designs to reduce waste throughout the production process
  • Design, procure and implement tooling and fixturing to support rapid setup changes
  • Analyze and plan staff utilization, space requirements, workflow, and layout of equipment to achieve maximum operational quality and reliability
  • Assist in definition of specifications for new equipment purchases
  • Support plant lean and EHS initiatives
  • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and processes Responsibilities also include: automation of large scale copper bar forming, development and implementation of the manufacturing equipment and processes for application of bar insulation systems, bar measurement workstations, bar test workstations, and bar material handling. This role shall also include advanced manufacturing engineering prototyping, planning, concurrent design for manufacturing and support of manufacturing tollgate deliverables for new product introductions on new generator platforms.

    Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 5 years of prior experience in manufacturing operations or manufacturing engineering positions

    Desired Characteristics
  • Experience with bar manufacture in motors or generator manufacturing environment or equivalent experience
  • Copper forming experience
  • Knowledge of generator insulation systems
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and ability to facilitate activity across plant functions
  • Strong project management abilities and experience
  • Hands on experience designing using CAD software
  • Experience working with integrators to develop custom equipment
  • Ability to use data and statistics to characterize a manufacturing process
  • Very creative talent with a proven ability to look past what is currently done and develop a practical, implementable vision for future manufacturing with an strong history of executing this vision
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
