Central Queens Y , is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community center serving over 10,000 persons of diverse backgrounds in Queens County. The CQY provides a continuum of social, recreational, and educational services for children, families and adults. For over two generations, the Central Queens Y, located in Forest Hills Queens, has been a special place for thousands of families, older adults, children and individuals who participate in its parenting, preschool, after school, cultural arts, camping, health and fitness, social services, and senior programming.
We are a community center with seven (7) after-school programs instructing Grades K–6, run from different school locations within Queens. Additional hours may be available at our other after-school locations, or job commitments can be made to one school site each week.
We are currently looking for Specialists in the following areas: Martial Arts, Arts & Crafts, Music, Yoga, Sports/Gym, Chess, Hebrew Culture Club and Drama.
JOB DESCRIPTIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Martial Arts: Judo, Karate, and Krav Maga
We are seeking a Martial Arts Teacher who is results-oriented, inspires a love of martial arts through rigorous lessons, and delivers engaging high quality instruction. Requirements: Our ideal Martial Arts Teacher will have full-time classroom experience in a school or after-school setting. Our Martial Arts Teacher will foster a safe environment in which our students can execute various martial arts techniques with determination, speed, accuracy, and balance. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Data Driven : Proven record of achievement as evidenced by student work and learning. Accountability : Ability to remain organized, punctual, and reliable. Management : Ability to manage the behavior in a classroom of approximately 10+ students that range in age from K–6 grade. Self-Reflection : Ability to accept and implement feedback received for real-time improvement. Preparation : Ability to study curriculum and do the intellectual work needed to deliver instruction at a high level.
Our ideal Chess Teacher will have classroom experience and demonstrated track record of propelling students' understanding and love of chess. Qualified candidates must have an advanced understanding of the game of chess as well as strong classroom management. Experience working with K–6 grade is preferred. Chess Advocacy: ability to communicate the academic, emotional, and social benefits of chess to teachers, leaders, and parents at the school. Cross-Curricular Mind Set: Ability and desire to teach chess in a way that supports literacy and math.
Music Teachers: Piano, Drum, Violin, and Choir
A Music Teacher at Central Queens Y must possess instructional skills and produce quality lesson plans that strive for higher-level objectives, yet accommodate all learning styles; maximize learning time through effective classroom management; use varied instructional techniques; and apply developmentally appropriate strategies.
Facilitate the creation of a music scope and sequence by class ability level.
Teach students about the technical aspects of music.
Encourage students to learn and appreciate music of all kinds.
Instruct students about tempo, pitch, rhythm, scales, chords, notations and, to some extent, the history of the art of music.
Explain and demonstrate artistic techniques to lead up to group performances.
Select and obtain materials such as textbooks and performance pieces.
Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in music education from accredited university (preferred); classroom experience, preferably as lead teacher.
Our Gym Specialist is responsible for the supervision of participants, the implementation of sports curriculum, promoting and actively participating in all activities, providing a safe and fun learning environment, and serving as a positive role model. Specifically, he/she will work with children from K–6 grade, instructing them in soccer, street hockey, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, flag football, and facilitating other recreational games and athletic tournaments.
Group supervision with attention to: behavior and group management; health and safety; and personal and skill development.
Organize and prepare daily lesson plans in a fun and creative manner.
Bring lesson plans to life through your participation, support and guidance.
Use effective classroom management skills to lead the activity and effectively create an inclusive, fun environment that promotes team building.
Outstanding communication skills which include the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all aspects of professional interaction with children and staff.
Keep track and organize all gym equipment.
Ability to write incident reports in a professional manner (should injuries occur).
Certification/Experience Requirements : Minimum of one year classroom teaching experience; Teaching Certification (preferred) or equivalent team sport coaching experience. Must be CPR and First Aid certified.
O ur Yoga Teacher will have classroom experience working with young children, preferably from K–6 grade. Our ideal candidate will foster a safe environment for our students to execute various yoga techniques through determination, tranquility, and balance. Must know how to: use the proper language to guide your students; modify the poses so that the students don’t get hurt; adjust your students so they get full benefit of the pose; teach the sequence of the poses; adjust your class for beginners/intermediate/advanced, teach the meaning of poses and meaning of phrases used. Must incorporate guided imagery, meditation, and yoga games for children.
Education Requirements : Must be a certified Yoga instructor.
Produce top notch performances for our after-school community. Inspire a love of drama and theater through teaching a variety of genres, performance styles, and techniques. Our ideal Drama Teacher will expose the children to a variety of opportunities and ways to participate in theater. These range from foundations in theater (stagecraft, acting, genres, movement, character creation and audience) to performances, both individual and ensemble. Students will be exposed to acting techniques, storytelling, puppetry, monologues, and theater games.
Preferred Certification Requirements: Candidates should possess a B.A. or B.S. and commensurate teaching experience of students from K–6 grade, as well as having practical experience as a theater director and/or teacher.
Jewish Culture Club
Our ideal Jewish Culture Club Specialist will have an in-depth understanding of Judaism; teach about upcoming holidays; have Shabbat parties with the children; teach Jewish and Hebrew songs, games, and Hebrew vocabulary development. Must have experience teaching children from K–6 grade. Prefer bilingual, Hebrew-speaking candidates. Prefer candidates who can play an instrument and teach songs with accompaniment of an instrument.
Hip-Hop Dance Instructor
Hip-Hop Dance Instructors are responsible for teaching dance techniques to students of all ages and abilities. Hip-Hop covers a broad spectrum of street dance styles from popping, locking, fusion, free style, and street style. Classes will culminate in a mid-season and end-of-year performance.
