Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii at Hilo Analytical Laboratory, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, maintenance, and repairs of instrumentation which includes: DeltaV Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS), Costech Elemental Analyzer, Varian Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES), Technicon AutoAnalyzer, and Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Analyzer. Develops and teaches directed studies course on operations of analytical instruments and development of analytical methods to undergraduate and graduate students. Provides laboratory presentations, tours, and safety reviews for laboratory courses and those with research components. Trains, supervises, schedules, and coordinates graduate and undergraduate students and staff, as well as assists faculty and researchers in experimental design, sample collection, preparation, and analysis, analytical quality control procedures, instrument use and operations, and laboratory safety. Fiscal responsibilities include: maintaining revolving fund account records, budgeting for staff support, purchasing of equipment and supplies, invoicing University and non-university clients for analytical services, and working with administration to develop and implement a small business plan.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Sciences (i.e., Marine Science, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Science, Biological Science). (Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) years college or university in Natural Sciences and two (2) years of related experience and training may be substituted for Master’s Degree.) EXPERIENCE: At least two (2) years of instrumental analysis experience in Analytical Chemistry. At least one (1) year of supervisory experience. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of the principles of Analytical Chemistry and data analysis and statistical analysis using Microsoft Excel. Demonstrated ability and experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing analytical instruments. Strong communication skills. Computer and data analysis skills.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with IRMS. Experience with ICP-OES. Previous water quality experience. Previous work experience in a research environment or environmental laboratory.
