The guidance department is an integral part of the total educational program. Its services seek to focus on the belief that each student is an individual with unique goals, experiences, problems, abilities and resources and each student must be counseled as an individual. In keeping with this philosophy, the counselor seeks to establish a working relationship with all students in developing an awareness of their strengths and weaknesses, in self-understanding, self-responsibility, decision making, developing values, attitudes and skills required to cope with and accomplish a more fulfilling life in today's complex society.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Registers students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
Coordinates the administration of all standardized testing. Assists students, teachers, and parents in evaluating aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data. Works with students in evolving educational and occupational plans in terms of such evaluation.
Conducts two or more scheduled interviews with each student assigned and remains available for further counseling at students' requests when appropriate. Counsels student in personal growth, self-understanding, maturity and future goals.
Arranges for home instruction in extended absences and summer school applications when requested.
Participates with other members of the pupil personnel services team in relationship to meeting the needs of the students.
Disseminates career information and serves as a career resource person for the implementation of appropriate career awareness programs.
Initiates conferences with parents when it is necessary to help them better understand and assist in the educational, vocational and personal guidance of their children and is available for parental conferences.
When appropriate, works with teams of teachers in a combined effort to provide the necessary guidance and planning required for an effective education for each individual student.
Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
Supervises the preparation and processing of college, scholarship and employment applications. Make recommendations for admissions and scholarships where applicable.
Initiates, assembles, maintains and interprets accurate cumulative records, activity records and uniform transcript records for assigned students. Maintains and protects the confidentiality of such student records.
Acts as consultant to staff, parents, learning institutions, community agencies, business and industry in reference to the student's growth and development. In the capacity as consultant, the counselor shares in curriculum revision, and assists in determining the appropriateness of course offerings and/or class placements for all students.
Maintains a current knowledge of trends and techniques within their field and actively pursues continuous professional improvement through their performance evaluations and individual professional improvement plans.
Where applicable, coordinates the placement and grouping of students.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with negotiated agreement.
EVALUATION: In accordance with the Board of Education policy.
