Under immediate direction, register, interview, screen and select potential donors. Perform sample, whole blood, therapeutic, research, and apheresis phlebotomy procedures. Provide donor care and conduct equipment quality control while delivering excellent customer service and adhering to company standards.

1. Greets, registers, screens and performs vital signs on prospective donors/patients.

1.1. Greets donors/patients when presenting to the collection site.

1.2. Registers donors and instructs donor on completion of the Blood Donation Record (BDR).

1.3. Accurately interviews, screens and ensures donor confidentiality and records donor "Medical History" including thorough examination of the BDR.

1.4. Accurately performs, evaluates and records hematocrit/hemoglobin test, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse.

1.5. Obtains informed consent.

1.6. Inspects and records donor arms for injections marks.

1.7. Approves and/or defers and records donor eligibility and consults with Supervisor and/or Technical Support Staff when Standard Operating Procedures do not specifically address eligibility.

1.8. Ensures donor confidentiality.

2. Performs all aspects of phlebotomy (whole blood and sample collection) procedures.

2.1 Greets donors/patients and verifies donor and BDR correspond at phlebotomy station.

2.2 Performs and records venipuncture / collection of whole blood (allogeneic, and therapeutic) and test samples.

2.3 Performs, ensures and verifies correct labeling of Blood Donation Record, sample tubes, and collection sets with Donor Identification numbers (DIN).

2.4 Solves "Special Situations" that occur during the procedure.

2.5 Dresses donation site(s) and informs donor of post donation instructions.

3. Performs all aspects of donor apheresis collections.

3.1. Sets up and programs apheresis machine with appropriate collection tubing set and information for the procedure.

3.2. Accurately label all apheresis products.

3.3. Explain procedure to donors and obtain informed consent.

3.4. Performs venipuncture(s) for access and, when appropriate, return line.

3.5. Collects appropriate component(s) and completes the appropriate "Procedure Record."

3.6. Monitors donor throughout procedure, resolves alarm problems and, when necessary, adjusts parameters and records problems and interventions.

3.7. Performs, ensures and verifies correct labeling of Blood Donation Record, Procedure Sheet, sample tubes, and bags with DIN.

3.8. Dresses donation site(s) and informs donor of post donation instructions.

4. Recognizes and implements appropriate intervention for donor/patient reactions.

4.1. Evaluates impending reaction and implements interventions to prevent reactions.

4.2. Recognizes impending and/or actual reactions.

4.3. Provides and records intervention.

4.4. Informs donor/patient of post-reaction care.

5. Performs quality control on equipment and initiates corrective action as necessary.

5.1. Performs and records equipment quality control.

5.2. Implements corrective action, notifies supervisor and records when equipment is out of compliance.

5.3. Reviews equipment Quality Control records as assigned.

6. Ensures proper handling of blood products for storage and transport.

6.1. Inspects DINs on collection set, record(s), and sample tubes for accuracy and completeness.

6.2. Heat seals tubing of collection sets.

6.3. Stores, packs and transports product collections and sample tubes.

7. Through organization’s customer care goals, promote donor retention.

7.1. Provides service which exceeds customer’s expectation.

7.2. Treats donor cordially, courteously and with respect when answering questions and handling difficult situations.

7.3. Thanks each donor and asks to schedule their next appointment.

8. Record documentation on blood donation records and other forms.

8.1. Documentation is detailed, thorough, complete and accurate.

8.2. Written documentation is legible.

8.3. Documentation demonstrates professionalism and an awareness of potential liability.

8.4. Maintains and verifies accuracy of apheresis donor/patient files.

9. Performs other essential duties

9.1. Cleans and maintains equipment and work areas.

9.2. Assures adequate supply and stocks inventory.

9.3. Assists with scheduling of procedures as assigned.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Related education and experience preferred: License Practical Nurse, Paramedic, Medical Licensed Technician, or degree in Health Sciences

Experience:

Previous work experience with phlebotomy practice preferred

Donor and/or Dialysis technician experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Attention to detail

Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred

Previous work experience with phlebotomy practice preferred

Donor and/or Dialysis technician experience preferred

Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with internal and external customers

Must be able to achieve and maintain current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification

Must be able to perform donor care and intervention

Ability to read, write and speak fluent English

Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly

Must be able to enter data into the computer

May require current driver's license and insurability

Ability to see the full color spectrum preferred

Full time (36 hours/week) position reporting to CDC at corporate headquarters at 717 Yosemite Street, Denver, CO 80230, which is a smoke free campus on 1/1/2014. Full benefit package in addition to $13.75 - $16.34 per hour, depending on experience. Shift requires working three 12 hour days on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
