General Description

This position is responsible for the availability and functionality of the physical assets for an assigned section of the plant. These leaders manage the resources for maintaining and repairing the process to achieve process availability, cost and functionality goals.


Effectively manage the No.1 Paper Machine operations in the areas of safety, production, quality of product and manufacturing cost. Manage and develop all exempt, non-exempt, and hourly employees in an unionized environment to safely maximize the production and quality of the product.

Essential Functions:
Manage No.1 Paper Machine resources to ensure achievement of safety, productivity, financial, quality, and on-time delivery goals.

Foster a team environment and actively engage salaried and hourly employees in achieving goals, resolving operating problems, and continuous improvement of paper board production.

Develop, coordinate, and monitor plans for reductions in cost and increased efficiencies in the No.1 Paper Machine area.

Lead departmental programs to ensure a healthy and safe working environment and to comply with federal and state regulations.

Work with direct reports and maintenance personnel to effectively plan and execute scheduled outages in safe manner within time and budget constraints to maintain or improve equipment reliability.

Coordinate with other departments to ensure that Mill goals are achieved.

Examples of specific activities


Ensure safety policies and practices are implemented across the assigned area. Maintain high levels of accountability with subordinates for full compliance of safety actions, training or policy changes that will support attainment of safety goals for the department.

Monitor all spending for subject area. Communicate with and involve business unit management in monthly spending goals, variances, and contingency plans that support adherence to approved budgets.

Participate in daily operational meetings with production and other groups to ensure effective communication and coordination.

Identify, and promote any modifications to equipment or systems that would improve reliability, productivity, quality, and cost effectiveness assigned areas.

Develop plans for personal growth and improved job performance for self and all salaried employees under direct area of responsibility.

Promote and create alignment of group and personal goals with the mill and business.

Daily demonstrate the ability to adapt and overcome obstacles to meeting targets and goals.


Bachelor's Degree in



Minimum of five years' experience in a salaried leadership position on a paper machine.

Demonstrate leadership through the ability to lead people and get results through others.

Communicate a compelling vision and sense of core purpose.

Ability to develop and participate in team environments to achieve goals and solve problems.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Knowledge of continuous production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of product.

Knowledge of business and management principles, organizational skills.

Possess the ability to learn on the fly coupled with intellectual horsepower.

Managing within a union environment

Ability to work with others to achieve mill goals.
